4 What is Sustainable Winegrowing? Sustainable Winegrowing practices: conserve water and energy maintain healthy soil reduce pesticide use preserve wildlife habitat protect air and water quality recycle natural resources enhance relations with employees and neighbors attain highest wine quality possible

5 Wine Institute & CA Association of Winegrape Growers partnership (launched in 2002) Comprehensive self-assessment workbook >1500 winery and vineyard organizations 68% winegrape acreage (358 K acres) 63% winecase production (150 M cases) Educational workshops throughout CA > 9000 participants at nearly 400 events Public Sustainability Reports (04, 06, 09) 3 RD party Certification option added in 2010 California Sustainable Winegrowing Program

6 Provides third-party verification that a winery or vineyard: –Adopts and implements sustainable practices based on 227 best practices –Meets 58 prerequisite criteria –Demonstrates continuous improvement. Enables certified wineries and vineyards to communicate commitment to sustainability. Enhances transparency and credibility with key stakeholders including regulators, trade, environmental organizations, media and consumers. Encourages statewide participation to advance entire CA wine industry towards best practices and maintain its global leadership position.
