Enabling you for BIM (Building Information Modelling)

What is BIM? “Building Information Modelling is digital representation of physical and functional characteristics of a facility creating a shared knowledge resource for information about it forming a reliable basis for decisions during its life cycle, from earliest conception to demolition.” Construction Industry Council’s - Definition What is BIM? Simple de-constructed version BIM = structured information for use in design, construction & management of facilities and assets

Who are BIM4SME? – Their objectives ► BIM4SME is independent & transparent service ► BIM4SME is here to help you to decide if BIM is for you ► BIM4SME is here to identify the risk for not embracing BIM ► BIM4SME is here to develop the opportunities in embracing BIM ► BIM4SME is here to bridge gaps to adopting BIM

► Is raising awareness of BIM within the SME marketplace ► Ensure SMEs understand the requirements of BIM relevant to their role in the supply chain ► Demonstrate the value proposition / business benefits to the SME better efficiency, better information and better decision making ► Make sure the SMEs understand the risks of doing nothing with regards BIM implementation ► Ensure that guidance is in simple English and suitable to their business lens The Government through the BIM Task Group ; here to help you

What is BIM for the delivery chain? Do I need drawings or schedules or models ……? How does it help the industry? But do I make profit? How much is it going to cost? Do we need it?

Who drives BIM? ► By the client, the “PULL” effect ► By the supply chain the “PUSH” effect – This is YOU Is BIM a separate activity? ► BIM is a business process supported by technology. The Argument – but we all use technology? ► BIM process uses technology and data assembly in collaboration.

The INDUSTRY & it’s typical participants LegalLegal FinancialFinancial ProfessionalProfessional ConstructionConstruction FacilitymanagersFacilitymanagers Sub supply The client Who is BIM for? - Everyone

Where do I sit in the BIM delivery chain? Can I participate in the BIM stuff as a SME? Is BIM for the big boys only? Before you discover where you sit in the delivery chain ► UNDERSTANDING the FULL delivery chain ► PROVIDING INFORMATION. Why it is important? ► Where, when and why the industry USES THIS INFORMATION? …it would be good for YOU to… Wait! let me explain yes no

ARCHITECTURAL, ENGNEERING & CONSTRUCTION & THE DELIVERY CHAIN ► This is also known as the “LIFE CYCLE” Intelligent briefing refurbish Demolish Redevelop Operate Manage Build Design Concept Idea UNDERSTANDING THE FULL DELIVERY CHAIN

PROVIDING RIGHT TYPE OF INFORMATION The Argument …but we do have brochures, datasheets, specifications! Here they are... INFORMATION A INFORMATION B Intelligent briefing refurbish Demolish Redevelop Operate Manage Build Design Concept Idea

PROVIDING RIGHT TYPE OF INFORMATION Making the information suitable for BIM All the information may be there, it may not be assembled in a uniform manner INFORMATION A INFORMATION B BIM INFORMATION A BIM INFORMATION B Where do you think your information is used? …….it can be used at any time and any where in the Life Cycle…..

…so where do I sit in the BIM delivery chain? Financial services Legal services Construction Facilities management Professional services Suppliers and sub suppliers – The SME Bundle Intelligent briefing refurbish Demolish Redevelop Operate Manage Build Design Concept Idea

These are the questions everyone is asking……. Which camp to follow? What technology do I need? Why are peer organisations disjointed Who is right? mixed messages! Why requirements are continuously Changing? The Jargon What is IFC? What is COBie? What is Uniclass? What is NRM?

Firstly - The Jargon dots joined – the simple version 1.Everything to do with industry is being put into a DATABASE 2.BIM is all about assembling information in a pattern so it is easily accessible 3.This information about your products and services which becomes the DATA

Now...to answer the most commonly asked questions Why are peer organisations disjointed? Which camp to follow? Who is right? – the mixed messages Why requirements are continuously changing?

The Technology Choice - the easy stuff INFO A BIM INFO A Welcome to BIM Assemble your product and services information without errors in a structured format as required. You need to have your data tested that it complies and can be adopted

The INDUSTRY & it’s typical participants FinancialFinancial Banks, insurance, accountants The financial sector needs to understand risk aversion in the BIM process.

The INDUSTRY & it’s typical participants Lawyers, Contract administrators, Arbitrators, projects managers The lawyers need to understand benefits of risk mitigations as opposed to transfer in the BIM process LegalLegal

The INDUSTRY & it’s typical participants Architects, engineers, energy consultants, IT, project managers, specialist consultants, surveyors, QS The professionals and the supply chain need to learn how to assemble, use and migrate the information in the BIM process ProfessionalsProfessionals

The INDUSTRY & it’s typical participants Principal contractors, sub-contractors, CDMs and all construction support services The contractors and the supply chain need to learn how to assemble, use and migrate the information in the BIM process ConstructionConstruction

The INDUSTRY & it’s typical participants Operators, surveyors The facilities managers need to understand how to use this information in the BIM process Facility Managers

The INDUSTRY & it’s typical participants Manufacturers, suppliers, hire services The manufacturers, suppliers, hire services, etc. need to learn how to assemble, use and migrate the information Sub supply

The client … and finally not forgetting early involvement, clear end-user requirements, understand what you want to achieve, will help drive BIM

Other choices This is not essential for all groups.....so what are these The Models? For manufacturers & suppliers, having digital models in your armoury can give you a market edge....so how can you get these The Models? create them yourself outsource them specialist houses develop them through local collaboration these are 3D models of your products, that contain the information required by BIM

The implications getting the models create them yourself outsource them specialist houses develop them through local collaboration  Low costs  High tech investment  Good quality control  Easy to adapt  Long learning period  Long time to market  High cost  No investment  Difficult quality control  Cannot adapt  Short learning period  Sort time to market  Distributed costs  Distributed investment  Good quality control  Easy to adapt  Short & distributed learning  Sort time to market

CONCLUSIONS 1.BIM is about assembling information – YOUR information 2.You & your company now have the opportunity to accept this new way of assembling information 3.Your information should be accurate and error free – High quality control 4.Your information should be transportable and adoptable by others using it 5.If you are users then you should be capable to use the information, adapt it and transport it – typically architects, engineers and contractors here to help you
