Division to decimal points
2
We will use the example below. It works out neatly to one decimal place 37 ÷ 8
3
First, put the problem in more useful form 37 8 How many times does 8 go into 37? 8 * 4 = 32 so it is 4 with a remainder of 5 Next ask:
4
Here is how it looks. 37 8 4 R 5 32 5 8 doesn’t go into 5 so that’s it. Right? No. Wrong.
5
Now, you seem stuck 37 8 4 32 5 But not if you remember this simple phrase
6
Add a point, add a zero. 37 8 4 32 5. 0 Now instead of being stuck with a remainder, you just keep dividing.
7
Ask how many times does 8 go into 50 (not 5) 37 8 4 32 5. 0 Answer is 6. Put 6 after the decimal point. 6
8
37 8 4 32 5. 0 8*6=48 so put 48 under the 50 and subtract. 6 4 8 2
9
37 8 4 32 5. 0 Now, add a zero after the 20 and repeat the process. 6 4 8 20
10
How many times does 8 go into 20? 2. So put 2 after the 6 16 under the 20. And repeat until you can't or until you get bored. 37 8 4 32 5. 0 6 4 8 20 16 2 4
