Archive holds Collections from 6 institutions. One museum, one public library, and 4 academic institutions. Histories and unique holdings of each institution. Intellectual property of each institution. Contains oral histories, newspapers, historical documents regarding the city of Abilene. Literary clubs developed across the nation as a part of the Chautauqua and Lyceum movement. Began in 1892 in Abilene, Texas as a literary reading club for women. This club was one of the original three of the Texas Federation of Women’s Clubs of Abilene. Membership was selective and by invitation only. Membership was kept at 21 members. Instrumental in funding, operating and maintaining the Abilene Public Library and helped promote many other civic enhancements in town. Will cease to exist in May 2013 after 120 years.
