Name and ethnicity Kim is a little 9 year old Vietnamese girl.
She is the 1st in the garden and begins the community garden.

Plants grown and why She grows Lima Beans like the beans she did as a class project a year ago. Kim wants to honor her father who has passed away. She hopes planting the beans will let her fathers spirit see her doing good things in her life and being a farmer like him. She is determined to make the plants live.

Character traits Lonely – Her mom and sister bond over her father, but she does not have as many memories as they do: “I’d been wakened by my mother’s crying. My oldest sister had joined in” (2). Determined – we see her go outside in the cold and plant the beans because it is important to her: “The snow had melted, but the ground was hard. After much work, I finished one hole, then a second, then a third” (3). Confident – She is wants to make her father proud with her lima beans and does whatever she can to make this happen: “And I vowed to myself that those beans would thrive” (4).

Gains from the garden Kim gains comfort and a distraction from the death of her father. She can show honor and respect for her father by being a good farmer like he was.

Character theme connection
Theme of a piece of fiction is its view about life and how people behave. In fiction, the theme is not intended to teach or preach. In fact, it is not presented directly at all. You extract it from the characters, action, and setting that make up the story. In other words, you must figure out the theme yourself Kim connects to the theme by the small act of starting the garden. *We will discuss the theme of Kim’s chapter at the end of the novel.

Term clarification Stereotypes involve generalizations about the "typical" characteristics of members of the groups. Jane is a female, so she probably has characteristics x, y, z, Prejudice is an attitude toward the members of some group based solely on their membership in that group (can be positive or negative) Discrimination is actual positive or negative actions toward the objects of prejudice
