2 The Aim of this Evening To inform you, the parents/carers, about what year 7 will look like for your child. To let you know how you can best support your child's learning at home.

3 The Aim of your Child’s First Year at Mayfield To ensure success for your child through a strong partnership between home and school.

5 Year 7 Organisation 10 forms (7M1-7M10) Most lessons are taught in form groups, however English, Maths and PE are taught in mixed form groups.

10 Home Learning and Independent Study Each subject has their own Home Learning policy. Your child should be spending at least 1 hour on home learning or independent study. In the planner (page 25) there is an independent study timetable which has been completed by your child and should be followed at home.

12 The role of the Year Group Leader Support and encouragement, both academic and personal to help your child achieve their potential To remove barriers to learning To ensure your child makes progress in and out of the classroom To deal with higher level behaviour To plan and ensure consistent delivery of the tutorial programme e.g. Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE), Independent Learning skills, Accelerated Reader

13 The Role of the Learning Mentor To support students outside and inside the classroom To work with targeted students in the year group To support students with any issues they may have To monitor attendance

14 Our Year Group Ethos Care for your environment Opportunities are available: maximise them Model your behaviour and set an example to others Meet and exceed your MEL (minimum expected level) Uniform should be worn correctly with pride Neat and tidy work – take care with your presentation It is important that you arrive on time and attend everyday Take risks in your learning and don’t give up You should always be prepared and ready to learn- correct equipment every day

15 Attendance Excellent attendance - Whole school target 95% Parents responsibility to call the school if a child is unable to attend Excellent Punctuality to school and each lesson Same day detention with the form tutor for lateness 90% attendance over one year = 20 days of missed lessons = 100 lessons Research shows that 17 days absence means Students’ achievement drops by one GCSE grade

16 Extra-curricular Clubs Challenge  We want to ensure that your child makes the most of all of the opportunities on offer at Mayfield.  There is a direct correlation between attendance at extra-curricular clubs and academic achievement.
