2 What is NaNoWriMo YWP?  November 1 st through 30 th  Reasonable, yet challenging, individual word-count goals.  We define a novel as “a lengthy work of fiction.”  Encourage frequent writing opportunities.  90% of students said NaNoWriMo made them more excited about writing.  Improves self-confidence, creative writing skills, literacy and language skills, and time management.

3 NaNoWriMo: A History  NaNoWriMo since 1999.  500,000+ participants in 2013.  2,000 classrooms and over 100,000 students and educators.  Australia :: Perth :: South wrote almost 4 Million words in 2013.  Supported by the City of Armadale, City of Cockburn, City of Gosnells, City of Melville, City of South Perth, Shire of Serpentine/Jarrahdale, and Town of Victoria Park.

4 Bringing YWP to Your Students  In the classroom: Students can participate in class with teacher resources such as lesson plans, workbooks, activities, a progress chart, and stickers.  In the school library: Invite students to write in the school library. Students can write together and follow progress on a school chart.  Independently at school: Provide resources so interested children can participate before or after school or during lunch, recess or free periods.  Independently at home and in the community: Give students information so they can participate from home or attend writing events at their local community library.

6 Benefits for Your School  Develop your students self-confidence, community spirit, creative writing skills, and a love of books, early literacy, and writing.  Establish a NaNoWriMo library of literary works with free paperback copies of novels by your students and anthologies by your class.  Optional activities and comprehensive lesson plans for a full term with a firm foundation in the English curriculum.  Supportive educator environment with a global online community of teachers on the forums.  Community recognition, encouragement, and endorsement from participating councils.

7 NaNoWriMo in the Classroom  Introduce students to NaNoWriMo – Participate as a class or school.  Optional – Plan your novel/story in October (discuss outlining, character development, story arcs, structure, and time management).  Start writing in November  Optional – Editing & Publishing in December (rewriting, editing, proofreading, cover design, and presentation).  Receive free professionally published copies of individual student novels or classroom fiction anthologies to keep in your school.

10 YWP Independent At School Or At Home  Support for independent writing students in the “West Australian Young Writers” virtual classroom and the YWP community forums online.  Independent students can have published copies of their own NaNoWriMo novel for friends and family.  Writing events at local community libraries provide inspiration and opportunities for students to write outside of school hours and among friends.  First five independent student participants from each community receives a complimentary starter kit.
