1 This section of UPLift! is aimed at students who want to further develop their information literacy skills. It focuses on using resources in the university library and beyond. For example, it will help you to locate resources which are useful for postgraduate research, such as collections in museums and galleries. Perhaps you know how to do some of these things already? Take the short quiz to find out. Perhaps you need to develop a particular skill? Take the link to find out more. 4 Suggest when you may need to access archival materials Using Library resources effectively My supervisor has told me to find some primary source material from the local archives, what does she mean? Advanced Skills Click on the camera to reveal what might be contained in an archive... Material in archives can sometimes be unique, specialised or rare. It might include, manuscripts, letters, diaries, photographs, artefacts, moving image and sound collections. So these can give an interesting perspective to your research.

Items may be published or unpublished and in a variety of media formats. Did you know that the University of Portsmouth has an archive which is housed in the University Library? 11 Identify resources to help locate special collections in UK libraries, museums and galleries Your librarian may recommend special libraries and collections for your area of research. However, the resources recommended below are useful to a wide range of subjects: Culture GridCulture Grid - provides access to UK arts, culture and heritage collections. You can also access European collections through Europeana. Results draw on image, audio and video artefacts. 13 Suggest where to find out which libraries hold particular journals Once you are certain that University of Portsmouth library doesn’t have the journal you require in its printed or electronic collections, you could begin your search with Suncat. 15 Describe how to search and access UK PhD theses You can search for PhDs, produced by members of the University of Portsmouth by visiting the Theses section of the library website. You can search for printed and electronic theses.Theses However, if you want to find out what has been published in the UK and Northern Ireland you should visit the British Library’s Ethos service. If the thesis is available online it provides a link to access or to download the item. If it is not yet available, if may be possible to request a digital copy.
