The Science Learning Center has two laboratories: The main laboratory, known as the SLC, and A computer laboratory, known as the SCC.

SLC in 62 SBSCC in 29 SB Locations

The main lab is usually open from 9 am to 6 pm during Fall and Winter semesters and 10 am to 4 pm in Summer. Check for changes on the SLC Website: http://umdearborn.edu/casl/slc/ The computer lab has open hours as requested by course instructors.

At the beginning of each course, you will be assigned the MODULES that you must master. Some modules cover mathematical and graphical skills necessary for your courses. Other modules teach you to use equipment correctly, before an assigned laboratory experiment.

Modules required for each course are: Included in the Syllabus for the course Posted both inside and outside the SLC Posted on the SLC Website

No calculators. Do not write in the test booklet. Your instructor will provide scratch paper. Use a pencil to fill out the scantron form. PRETEST If you are in Chem 134 or 136, you will be given a PRETEST to determine your ability in basic mathematical skills.

Based on your performance on the PRETEST, you may be required to complete specific MODULES in order to help you master some basic mathematical concepts. Graphing Significant Figures Linear Relations Calculations with Exponents Dimensional Analysis Transformation of Exponential Equations Exponential Notation

The PRETEST results will be posted outside of the General Chemistry Labs (242 SB and 244 SB) and outside of the SLC (62 SB).

Almost all Modules can now be reviewed on our Website. See our Website for details. (http://umdearborn.edu/casl/moduleslisting/)

No appointment is needed, except for the instrument modules. You may not take post tests until the pretests have been graded. Personal electronic devices (cell phones, tablets, etc.) must be stowed in your backpack while you are taking post tests. Only students working on instrument modules or post tests may be present in the SLC. No friends may accompany you while you are working. The testing environment must remain quiet. No talking, please. Guidelines for Completing Post Tests

Sign-up sheets for modules are located on the front desk in 62 SB. Write your name in one of the available time slots. The time between appointments indicates about how long it will take to finish the unit.

Be sure to keep a record of your appointment time! If you can’t keep your appointment or you will be more than 10 minutes late, please call to let us know. Our phone number is (313)593-5512. Although preference is given to students with appointments, if you are not on time, your time slot may be given to another student.

SIGN UP EARLY!! Be sure to sign up early for your modules, even if they are not due until later in the semester.

Protocol for Working on Modules

Work through the material in the Module doing sample problems or making practice measurements as directed.

After you have completed the Module, bring the materials back to the front desk and obtain a post test. You must get a perfect score on the post test to satisfy the requirement.

If you don’t pass the test on the first try, you can review the material and take another version of the test until you answer all questions correctly.

To ensure proper data entry, be sure that your test includes: NAME STUDENT NUMBER COURSE NUMBER LAB SECTION NUMBER

When you complete your post test, that information will be entered into the database. The data will be sent to your lab instructor, posted outside 62 SB, and posted on the SLC Website. 5/10/99 5/11/99

Remember your due dates!! If you do not complete a Module by the posted due date, you may lose points or be prohibited from participating in a lab experiment.

If you already have done one or more of the required Modules for another class, you may be able to transfer your records instead of repeating the Module. MATH modules that are PRETESTED CANNOT have previous records transferred.

If your records can be transferred, fill out a MODULE TRANSFER FORM. Be sure to check the postings or ask the Student Assistants to verify that the records DID TRANSFER to your current class!
