On The Waterfront

PLOT Edie and Terry are walking in the park after escaping Johnny Friendlys mob at the church. The location is at New Jersey Park.

Terry -Inquisitive -Open body language -High confidence -Misunderstood(placing the glove on the hand is his form of a kind gesture)

Edie -Presents herself in a formal, lady-like manner -Uncomfortable with her surroundings -Glove represents insecurity -Lack of confidence and trust in others

The Glove -Represents Edies insecurity -Relates to how uncomfortable she is of Terrys prying questions -When Terry wears it, she is vulnerable, and feels very little control -Terry attempts to connect to her via placing his hand inside it

Spiked gates -Symbolic of how mean the waterfront can be -Thats what makes people mean and difficult. People dont care enough about you. -Represents the waterfront as a prison

Fog -Set in background to add a chilly atmosphere -Symbolic of Terrys conscience at work -Sets the mood

Themes -Fear and family -Love -Career

Setting -Set in the park on the docks in New Jersey -Gives characters a chance to discuss their lives -Gives a background on Edie

Historical/Social/Cultural Context -Culture of the 1950s -Black and white film: normal for time period -Clothing is common for those in this time period -Edies dress is popular for women -Terrys clothing mimics those worn by working class men -Terry accustomed to the city -I never really liked the country

Edies clothing -Edie covered neck down -Insecure about her self, low self- esteem: Very little skin is revealed -Losing her glove represents the vulnerability she is feeling -When she takes it back, she is more comfortable and the mood lightens

Music The music enters as soon as Edie tells Terry that sheremembered him the first moment she saw him. It is as though it is a pivotal moment. It suggests that a relationship may be possible. Edie seems to reciprocate and flirt back as opposed to the first portion of this scene, the music increasing the intensity and reflecting her reciprocation.

Sound Effects Initially all that can be heard is the whistling of the ships and the sound of the gusty wind. This complements the effect of the fog and almost isolated atmosphere. Only Terry and Edie are around suggesting it would be unwise to leave Edie walk alone. It interferes with the dialogue and somewhat adding to the awkwardness in their conversation.
