PAPER STYLES

Express and Reflect express or reflect on your own life experiences. Often looking backwards to look forwards.

Inform and Explain shares a main point or purpose. Tries to present information in a surprising way.

Evaluate and Judge focuses on the worth of the person, object, idea, or other phenomenon. Usually specifies the criteria to the object being seen as “good” or “bad”.

Inquire and Explore wrestles with a question or problem. Hooks with the problem and lets the reader watch them wrestle with it.

Analyze and Interpret seeks to analyze and interpret phenomena that are difficult to understand or explain.

Take a Stand/Purpose a Solution seeks to persuade audiences to accept a particular position on a controversial issue. Describes the problem, proposes a solution, and provides justification.

Senior Project Paper Needs to include ALL styles of writing. – Narrative (express and reflect) – History/informational (Inform and explain) – Evaluate and judge (look at counterargument) – Inquire and Explore – Analyze and Interpret – Persuasive/take a stand – Purpose a solution Challenge is to write without labeling sections – all pieces flow together to create 1 college level 10 page paper!!

My Structure I.Express and Reflect (2 pages) I.National team experience II.Take a stand – Thesis I.Sports, especially swimming can help to deepen a high schooler’s understanding of physics while creating a fun learning atmosphere. III.Inform (2 pages) I.HS students avoid physics because they think that it is too hard and uninteresting II.Statics about why they don’t take, current grades, the number of students enrolled IV.Take a Stand (6 pages) I.Inquire and Explore - what can teachers due make physics more exciting and appealing to HS? II.Analyze and Interpret- How can sports help? What physics concepts do sports address? III. Evaluate and Judge – what studies have already been conducted to incorporate sports into physic concepts? What where the results? V.Solution (1 page) I.Sports can be effective when trying to teach HS physics. Schools should have a physics class that would explore this option.

Bottom line However you structure your essay – everything goes back to your stand – your thesis!!! Go deep – analyze – think about your topic from all points of view but always bring back to thesis and proving your point! Convince your audience that your solution is the best – the most logical!
