The Writing Process The Five Steps Include: Prewriting Drafting Revising Editing Publishing

4 Prewriting Prewriting includes many different things, but the first thing I want you to think about is the following: FATR

5 FATR What is it and why do we need it? The acronym FATR will help us create a piece of writing that is well constructed and stays on topic.

6 F The F stands for Form! What is form?
Ask yourself, “What am I going to write?” What’s the best way to get your point across? Letter Poem Essay Short Story

7 A The A stands for Audience! Ask yourself, “Who will be reading my writing?” Why is this important?

8 T The T stands for Topic! Ask yourself, “What am I going to be writing about?

9 R The R stands for Reason! Ask yourself, “Why am I writing this?”
To Persuade To Entertain To Inform That was hilarious!

10 #1 Prewriting After you have figured out form, audience, topic and the reason you’re writing you may begin to: Gather information Organize your ideas Create a writing plan

11 JUST WRITE! #2 Drafting This is where you begin your actual writing.
During this step, although it’s important, you don’t need to worry about spelling, grammar, capitalization, or punctuation. JUST WRITE!

12 #3 Revising: In Mr. Ruiz’s opinion, the most important step of the writing process!
During this step, you are thinking about who will be reading your assignment! During the revising step you need to: Read over your writing and make sure it stays on topic Add more details that support the main topic. Take out any unnecessary words or details. (Remember…the longer your story is doesn’t make it better!) Make sure your story follows a logical order of events. Use descriptive words and figurative language. You may need to rewrite sentences so they are easy for the reader to understand. Do you have a clear beginning, middle, and end?

13 #4 Editing This is where you look for correct capitalization and punctuation. Check to make sure you have used correct grammar. Make sure that your writing is spelled correctly!

14 #5 Publishing Create your final draft! If you are writing your assignment make sure you use your best handwriting. If you typed your assignment, make sure your font and size is appropriate.
