Hacer with Expressions of Time Pg. 4

In Spanish, if someone asks, “How long has this been going on?” or “How long has it been?” you answer with the verb HACER. Hace + period of time + que + present tense verb. I’ve been wanting (present tense) to go to Puerto Rico for 4 years. It makes 4 years that I want to go to Puerto Rico = Hace cuatro años que quiero ir a Puerto Rico. Doctor, I’ve been waiting for an hour! = Doctor, it makes an hour that I wait! _Doctor, hace una hora que espero! ____

We’ve been studying for 15 minutes = _Hace quince minutos que estudiamos____

If you’re the one doing the asking, do the same thing, but use “Cuánto tiempo” in your sentence, which means “How much time?” ¿Cuánto tiempo + hace + que + present tense verb?

How long have you been waiting? How much time does it make that you wait? = ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que esperas? How long have you wanted to go to Puerto Rico? How much time does it make that you want to go to Puerto Rico? = ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que quieres ir a Puerto Rico?

If you are talking about the PAST, use the preterite and “hace” to say “ ago.” I went to Mexico a year ago = It makes a year that I went to Mexico. Hace un año que fui a México. ( the recipe is the same. Just use the preterite instead of the present)

When using “ago” you can put the verb first. In this case, you do NOT need the “que” which acts as the “that.” I went to Mexico it makes a year = Fui a México hace un año. I met her 4 years ago = It makes 4 years that I met her = Hace cuatro años que la conocí OR I met her it makes 4 years = ____La conocí hace cuatro años_
