6 WHY EMPLOY A PERSON WITH A DISABILITY, ILLNESS OR INJURY ? Well why not! – Especially if they have the skills you require. 1 in 5 Australians have a disability, 64% are in paid employment. An outstanding figure that is only increasing by working together with motivated employees and employers that recognise and support the needs for people with disability to be a part of the growing Australian workforce. In Victoria 4% of workers with a disability claim for accidents compared to 14.7% of workers without disabilities. Of Australians with a disability who are employed, 79% have a better than average attendance rate and there is a 72% retention rate. Employing people with disability increases customer loyalty because with one in five Australians having a disability, your workplace represents your customer base. The direct benefit is clear: staff turn over is low; productivity is high; and there is an increased stability in the workplace.
