1 Joshua Uzoigwe studied music at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London. He later did post graduate work in ethnomusicology with John Blacking at the Queen's University of Belfast, from where he received his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. Joshua Uzoigwe (biography (by Akin Euba, 1993)

2 Career Uzoigwe has taught at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Nigeria, and is currently a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Music, University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

3 Influence of ethnomusicology on creativity Uzoigwe's music reflects the influence of ethnomusicology on creativity. The piano writing in the first of his Four Igbo Songs for voice and piano clearly demonstrates the concept of African pianism. The piano is made to 'behave' like an African instrument and the piano part sounds as if it were a transcription of an African instrumental part rather than a through composed part.

4 A new dimension in the practice of ethnomusicology Uzoigwe's study of Akin Eubas work (Uzoigwe 1992) represents a new dimension in the practice of ethnomusicology and is an important contribution to the knowledge of neo African art music. Uzoigwe is cited in Contemporary Composers (Morton and Collins 1992).
