2. JUST SO WE’RE CLEAR... What’s a noun?  person, place, thing, idea Which nouns are we talking about?  People nouns: un copain, une voisine, mon père, ta prof, un étudiant  Possessions nouns: un ordinateur, une montre, ma voiture, le portable Noun King

3. WHAT ARE ADJECTIVES? Words that modify nouns.  Colors  Physical Description  Personality Description  Nationality

4. WHAT DO YOU MEAN MODIFY? Modifying a noun means that the adjective changes something about the noun- the color, for example. un véloun vélo orange

5. AGREEMENT?? An adjective must agree with the noun it modifies.  in number (singular or plural)  in gender (masculine or feminine)  La fille est blonde.  Les montres sont roses. Noun King lowly adjective

6. GENDER AGREEMENT How can “red” be masculine or feminine?? (The same way a bed is masculine and a bedroom is feminine!) un lit une chambre

7. GENDER AGREEMENT RULES Rule #1: If the adjective ends a consonant, add to “e” to make it feminine.  Le tapis est vert.  La chaise est verte.

8. GENDER AGREEMENT RULES Rule #2: Adjectives that end in “e” don’t change.  Le tapis est jaune.  La chaise est jaune.

9. NUMBER AGREEMENT How can “red” be singular or plural?? Answer: The same way that it can be masculine or feminine. (This is a tough one to accept for English speakers.)

10. NUMBER AGREEMENT RULES Rule #1:  If the adjective ends in anything except “s”, add s to make it plural.  (just like making a noun plural)  Les réveils sont verts.  Les tables sont vertes. (still feminine!)

11. NUMBER AGREEMENT RULES Rule #2:  Like nouns, if the adjective ends in “s”, leave it alone.  Les ordinateurs sont gris.  Les lampes sont grises. (still feminine)

12. REMEMBER: Because all nouns are masculine or feminine, adjectives have to be masculine or feminine too. Because nouns are singular or plural, adjectives have to be singular or plural too. Noun King lowly adjective
