The NZ Fire Service response comprised an additional 166 paid; 400 volunteers; 150 NZ USAR and 150 support staff deployed. Operational personnel provided an immediate response and promptly implemented rescue operations. Rescue operations were completed under the leadership of Senior Station Officers and many personnel took calculated risks that were beyond normal expectations, without which, many more lives would have been lost. NZ Fire Service personnel in Christchurch responded to approximately 4150 calls between Tuesday the 22nd of February and Thursday the 10th of March. After this date, call volume returned to usual levels, but there were still more ‘natural event’ calls than usual. The chart below summarises of the Chch calls handled by the ComCens during this time: Note: The ‘Rescue’ category in this table refers to NZFS callouts to this type of incident
