Passé Composé vs. Imparfait Both tenses are in the past Use Passé Composé for events that only happen once or at one specific time. All use Passé Composé to give specific events that happened in a story/situation. Use Imparfait for events that happened repeatedly in the past or for a duration of time. Also use Imparfait to give background details in a story.

Exemples: Quand j’etais petite, je/j’ ______ des carrottes. (manger) mangeais (happened repeatedly) Hier, je/j’ ______ “The Last Song” (voir) j’ai vu (happened once) Il _____ (faire) beau et puis, je/j’ ________(tomber) fasisait (background—it was a nice day); je suis tombé(e) (I fell one time in the story)
