History If you look at a map, you will see Austria at the heart of Europe. It looks very small, just larger than the state of Maryland. Yet, believe it or not, Austria used to be one of Europe’s largest countries!!! Under the powerful Hapsburg royal family, the Austrian Empire used to own much of Europe from the late 1200s to 1900s. World War I destroyed that empire. By 1918, Austria had become a republic, with the borders it has today. BBBAAAMMMM!!! !!!

Government and Economy Austria’s economy is strong and varied. The mountains provide valuable timber and hydroelectric power. They also attract many tourists for things like skiing and hiking. Austrian factories provide machinery, chemicals, metals, and vehicles. The country also has petroleum and natural gas. People raise dairy cattle, other livestock, sugar beets, grains, potatoes and fruits. Most Austrians live in cities and towns and are manufacturers or provide service jobs. Austria is a federal republic - a form of government made up of a federal state with a constitution and has self-governing subunits.

Land and Climate The Alps cover about 75% of Austria. Austria is one of the most mountainous countries in the world. The Danube River across the country’s northern region. Austria’s climate is similar to Switzerland. Austria has a marine west coast and humid subtropical climate. Have you ever seen the show The Sound of Music? It takes place in Austria’s majestic moutains!!!!!!
