2 Directions 1. Each group and individual will choose a topic and question to research. 2. Each student will research, read and print one article about his/her topic using the databases Mrs. LaFever shows you how to access. 3. Do NOT use the following sources: Wikipedia,.com or Google. 4. Read your article before you print it. 5. Your article should have at least one full page of text (excluding the publishing information) or be teacher approved. 6. You are expected to annotate and turn in the article the day you make your presentation. 7. There are three questions listed for each topic. The questions listed are included to help you get started. As juniors, you should be able to read your article and identify additional information that will make your presentation effective and informative.

3 Rubric *Slide 1- should be a title slide with group members’ names, topic, class period and date ____/3 points. *Slides 2-4- should answer the questions that were provided to you. ______/7 points *Slides 5-6 (more if needed)- additional information that your group felt was worthy of sharing based on what you discovered during your research. _______/7 points *Slide 7- Works Cited slide including all sources that the entire group used in MLA format. ____/6 group points Turn in individual annotated article. ______/7 points (annotated does not mean merely highlighted-questioning, clarifying, reader connections, vocabulary defined, etc.) *Presentation points (no gum, you should be standing, use appropriate voice level and eye contact-not just reading from slides) ____/10 individual points. Total _____/40 points

4 Responsibilities Each group member must create one of the slides based on one of the questions Each group member will be responsible for individual articles and at least one of the slides. In addition: One member will create the works cited; One member will create the PowerPoint; One member will responsible for the “extra” information All Material must be placed on a flash drive and brought to class.

7 Topic 2: Senator Joe McCarthy and McCarthyism due 9/17 Parker, Sam, Caleb 1. Who was Joe McCarthy? (Provide background information.) 2. What was McCarthyism? 3. Describe the Army-McCarthy Trials.

8 Topic 3: The Red Scare due 9/17 Will, Tom, Willy 1. What was The Red Scare? (Provide background information.) 2. Why were Americans scared of Communism? 3. What caused The Red Scare?

9 Topic 4: Blacklisting in the 1940s and 1950s due 9/19 Cole, Ethan, Laurence 1. Describe the blacklists and the impact felt by those who were on the list and accused? 2. People from which fields and/or careers were on the blacklists? 3. What dilemma did the witnesses who were subpoenaed to testify at the trials face?

10 Topic 5: House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) 1.What was the purpose of this group? 2. When and why was this group started? 3. In the 1940s and 1950s, why did the HUAC go after people who worked in Hollywood?

11 Topic 6: New England in the 1690’s due 9/20 Garrett, Austin, Myles 1. What type of people settled Massachusetts? 2. Midwives in their roles in Colonial America. 3. What were the main fears and anxieties of people during this time?

12 Topic 7: Why did the Puritans leave England? due 9/23 Alex C, Mitchell, Paul 1. Describe the religious climate in England in the early 1600s. 2. Why did the Puritans become dissatisfied with the Church of England in the early 1600s and choose to immigrate to the New World? 3. What was the “Doctrine of Predestination” and how did this impact the daily lives of the Puritans?

13 Topic 8: Puritans and Predestination due 9/24 Leif 1. The Puritans believed in Predestination. What was this? 2. Describe how the belief in "Predestination" affected the way in which the Puritans lived. 3. Puritans created the first formal school in this country. Describe the school system established by the Puritans.

14 Topic 9: Salem Witch Trials due 9/26 Emma-Ruth and Carmelita 1. What is Ergot poisoning? Role of witchcraft in our society today? 2. How was witchcraft viewed in 17 th century New England? 3. What is voodoo and its origin?

15 Topic 10: Persecution of Others due 9/27 Kenny, Brianna, Alex R You must gather information on at least one persecution other than the Salem Witch Trials, and identify the following: 1. the causes (focus on the beliefs of the society and the people behind it), 2. the consequences (both for individuals accused and accusing, and for the society), 3. possible ways to have avoided them. Be sure your solutions are applicable to the people at that time period and in that situation.
