3. 1.Ordinary World - The hero's normal world before the story begins 2.Call to Adventure - The hero is presented with a problem, challenge or adventure 3.Refusal of the Call - The hero refuses the challenge or journey, usually because he's scared 4. Meeting with the Mentor - The hero meets a mentor to gain advice or training for the adventure

4. 5. Crossing the First Threshold - The hero crosses the ordinary world and goes into the special world 6. Tests, Allies, Enemies - The hero faces tests, meets allies, confronts enemies & learn the rules of the Special World. 7. Approach - The hero has hit setbacks during tests and may need to try a new idea 8. Ordeal - The biggest life or death crisis

5. 9. Reward - The hero has survived death, overcomes his fear and now earns the reward 10. The Road Back - The hero must return to the Ordinary World. 11. Resurrection Hero - another test where the hero faces death – he has to use everything he's learned 12. Return with Elixir - The hero returns from the journey with the elixir, and uses it to help everyone in the Ordinary World

6. The hero starts out living an ordinary life. He or she is called to go on a quest, often by a mentor. Examples: o Glinda the Good Witch tells Dorothy she must visit the Wizard of Oz o Obi-Wan Kenobi asks Luke Skywalker to restore balance in the force. o Gandalf enlists Frodos help to destroy the One Ring. The hero might doubt that he or she is capable of completing a quest, and refuse the call. However, the mentor encourages the hero or even gives magical items to help.

7. The hero goes through many trials on his or her way to achieving the quest. Adversaries (enemies) will often block their way to new places. The hero must either outsmart or defeat them. Allies join the hero to help. o The Tin Man, Scarecrow, and Cowardly Lion help Dorothy o Luke and Obi-Wan hire Han Solo and Chewbacca o The Fellowship of the Ring journey with Frodo

8. A shadow represents the dark side of the hero. o The Wicked Witch: an evil user of magic o Darth Vader: a fallen Jedi who uses the dark side of the Force o Gollum: a hobbit corrupted by the One Ring The shadow stands in the heros way of achieving his or her goal. Only the hero may fight the shadow. The heros mentor or his or her allies are not allowed to interfere.

9. The hero defeats the shadow and is able to finish his or her quest. The hero returns back home as a different person then when the quest started. Sometimes the mentor or the allies leave the hero, knowing that the quest is completed.

10. Others may not recognize the hero when he or she returns home because the hero has changed. Sometimes the hero has to clean up or fix something that happened to his or her hometown when the hero was on the quest. The hero has help along the way from magical items, mentors, and allies, but it is ultimately whats inside the hero that helps the hero win.
