2. Neptune's Layers
Neptune is made mostly of gasses, water and minerals. The first layer is made of liquid hydrogen. The second layer is water. Lastly, Neptune has a very rocky core made of nickel, iron and silicates.

3. Neptune's Moons
Neptune has 13 moons but is very difficult to see with the naked eye from Earth. Neptune’s inner moons are Naiad, Thalassa, Despina and Galatea. Neptune’s outer moons are Larissa, Proteus, Triton and Nereid. Some others are Caliban and Sycorax.

4. Neptune's Atmosphere
Neptune's atmosphere is 80% hydrogen, 19% helium and 1% methane. The methane gives Neptune its blue color. The upper atmosphere are clouds of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide. The lower atmosphere is made of hydrogen, helium and methane gasses.
                                                

5. Neptune's Surface
Scientists believe that under Neptune’s atmosphere there is either ice or liquid water. The climate is very cold and is approximately -200° Celsius. Neptune’s weather has a lot of storms with winds at nearly 600 mph.

6. Neptune's Discovery
After the discovery of Uranus, its orbit was not as it should be according to Newton’s laws. There for, another planet was predicted. Neptune was discovered by Galle and d’Arrest on September 23,1846. On 1613, Galileo saw Neptune when it was near Jupiter. Galileo thought Neptune was a star.

7. Voyages to Neptune
There has only been one visit to Neptune. The planet was visited by the Voyager2 on August 25,1989. Much of what we know about Neptune came from Voyager2 and HST. That means we don’t know a lot about the planet!

Neptune’s volume is 57 times more than Earth.
One day on Neptune is 0.75 Earth days.
The average temperature is -370° F.
Neptune is 2,794 million miles away from the Sun.

9. Fun Facts About Neptune's Moons
The moon Triton reminds people of a cantaloupe.
Since people discovered that Neptune has 13 moons, they are the newest moons discovered since 1989.
Neptune's 4 inner moons are Naiad, Thalassa, Galatea and Despina.
Proteus is Neptune’s second largest moon.
Nereid was discovered in 1949.
