Breakout Session Surface and Downhole Equipment Specs How can performance be improved by product selection? OR Can I purchase a perfect pumping system?

Surface and Downhole Equipment Specs Operating Challenges: CorrosionErosion SandGas CO 2 H 2 S High temperaturesWellbore deviation Low volumeHigh volume High loads Surface height restrictions

Surface and Downhole Equipment Specs Service companies and manufacturers CAN be your friends They are very knowledgeable about their products All their time is spent is support of their product They MAY NOT know all your problems and your companys drivers

Surface and Downhole Equipment Specs Downhole Pumps Simple, (relatively) inexpensive Challenges: corrosion, abrasion, high pressure differentials Solutions: metallurgy, coatings, different configurations Design is a compromise, need to know the operating conditions

Surface and Downhole Equipment Specs Downhole Pumps Successful designs typically based on experience Admiralty brass is harder than brass fittings (tensile ~ same as steel) Chrome plated brass barrels should be effective but difficult plating process Nickel carbide can wear rapidly in horizontal installations

Surface and Downhole Equipment Specs Downhole Pumps Tension pump increases minimum loads above the pump (not good with gas) Pressure actuated pumps may create compression in the rod string JASN failures can be reduced by coatings, liners or pull tube discharge

Surface and Downhole Equipment Specs Rods 7 Types of rods –API C 90-115K –API K 90-115K –API D (carbon) 115-140K –API D (alloy) 115-140K –D (special alloy) 115-140K –High strength 140+K –Case hardened

Surface and Downhole Equipment Specs Rods Various loading capabilities –Different metallurgies No rods are corrosion resistant –You cant afford one that would be –Need a good chemical control program Recommended using a service factor of 1 (or more) when designing new rods –Especially if upgrading required

Surface and Downhole Equipment Specs Rods High strength rods are more notch sensitive HS rods limited by coupling strength MUST have an excellent chemical inhibition program with HS rods Rods typically dont fail in fatigue –Inspected rods can be rerun –Use a SF<1 when running used rods

Surface and Downhole Equipment Specs Discussion 2 oil patches –Well run –Look over the fence design Who designs pumping systems? –Company man or suppliers? Who looks at more options? Is enough data provided? Is it correct? Suppliers need feedback on performance
