2 Tip #1 SHOW THE DESKTOP When you have windows open and want to quickly get back to the desktop: click the vertical rectangle in the lower right-hand corner of the taskbar – just to the right of the clock. Click it a second time and the desktop will disappear.

3 Tip #2 CUSTOMIZE THE SHUT DOWN BUTTON Do you put your computer to sleep more often than shut it down? Or, perhaps you restart it more. Change the Shut Down Button to make it faster!

4 Tip #2 CUSTOMIZE THE SHUT DOWN BUTTON Right-click on the Start button and choose Properties.

5 Tip #2 CUSTOMIZE THE SHUT DOWN BUTTON On the Properties window, click the drop-down menu for the “Power button action” and choose which action you want to replace the “Shut down” option. Then, click OK.

6 Tip #3 USE SHORTCUT KEYS TO OPEN YOUR FAVORITE PROGRAMS You can open any favorite program which is pinned to the taskbar by holding down the Windows Key on your keyboard and then tapping the number which corresponds to the order of your programs.

7 Tip #3 USE SHORTCUT KEYS TO OPEN YOUR FAVORITE PROGRAMS As an example, if this is my taskbar, the programs are numbered 1 through 8 starting to the right of the Start button. So, if I wanted to open Bing, I would hold down the Windows Key and then press 3.

8 Tip #4 CHANGE THE ORDER OF PROGRAMS PINNED TO THE TASKBAR Using our example from Tip #3, if you wanted to change the order of programs on the taskbar, you simply left- click and hold, on the program you want to move, and then slide either left or right to change the order.

9 Tip #5 ADD A CLOCK Want to be able to see the time in some other part of the world but don’t want to take up desktop space with gadgets? Here’s an easy way to add up to two clocks.

10 Tip #5 ADD A CLOCK 1) Left-click on the clock in the lower right-hand corner. A window with the time and calendar will pop-up. Click on “Change date and time settings.”

11 Tip #5 ADD A CLOCK In the new window which appears, click on the “Additional Clocks” tab.

12 Tip #5 ADD A CLOCK Put a checkmark in the first “Show this clock” box and then select the appropriate time zone from the drop down menu.

13 Tip #5 ADD A CLOCK Enter a name for this clock. If you want a second clock, duplicate the procedure in the second “Show this clock” checkbox. When finished, click OK.

14 Tip #5 ADD A CLOCK Left-click on the clock in the lower right-hand corner and the clock(s) you’ve added will appear along with the normal clock.

15 Tip #6 USE JUMP LISTS Jump lists are accessed from the taskbar with a right-click on programs pinned there which are used to open various files. Examples include: Word, Internet Explorer, Excel, etc.

16 Tip #6 USE JUMP LISTS Jump lists are accessed from the start menu by moving your mouse to the arrows next to the program name.

17 Tip #7 CHANGE THE NUMBER OF ITEMS APPEARING IN YOUR JUMP LISTS Sometimes, ten just isn’t enough. Here’s how to change the number of items appearing in your jump lists:

19 Tip #7 CHANGE THE NUMBER OF ITEMS APPEARING IN YOUR JUMP LISTS Click on the “Customize” button.

20 Tip #7 CHANGE THE NUMBER OF ITEMS APPEARING IN YOUR JUMP LISTS Find “Number of recent items to display in Jump Lists.” Use the up and down arrow to change the number.

21 Tip #7 CHANGE THE NUMBER OF ITEMS APPEARING IN YOUR JUMP LISTS Click OK and then OK.

22 Tip #8 PIN STICKY NOTES TO YOUR START MENU AND/OR TASKBAR 1) To find Sticky Notes, go to START MENU, ALL PROGRAMS, ACCESSORIES.

23 Tip #8 PIN STICKY NOTES TO YOUR START MENU AND/OR TASKBAR 2) Right-click on Sticky Notes and choose from the menu which appears.

24 Tip #8 PIN STICKY NOTES TO YOUR START MENU AND/OR TASKBAR 3) Pin to Taskbar or Pin to Start Menu

25 Tip #8 PIN STICKY NOTES TO YOUR START MENU AND/OR TASKBAR I prefer to pin it to the Start Menu

26 Tip #9 USE STICKY NOTES MORE EFFECTIVELY BY CHANGING COLORS 1) Open Sticky Notes

27 Tip #9 USE STICKY NOTES MORE EFFECTIVELY BY CHANGING COLORS 2) To differentiate between the importance of your notes, right-click on a note and choose a different color.

29 Tip #10 CLOSE STICKY NOTES Click on any one of your notes. Use the ALT + F4 combination to close your Sticky Notes

30 Tip #11 LOWER THE VOLUME ON SYSTEM SOUNDS ONLY Do you find the system sounds a bit annoying? Maybe you don’t want to turn them off but you’d just like them quieter. You could lower the overall volume but then all sounds would be dampened. Here’s how to just lower the volume level on system sounds:

31 Tip #11 LOWER THE VOLUME ON SYSTEM SOUNDS ONLY 1) Right-click on the speaker in the lower right-hand corner of the taskbar.

32 Tip #11 LOWER THE VOLUME ON SYSTEM SOUNDS ONLY 2) From the menu, click on “Open Volume Mixer.”

33 Tip #11 LOWER THE VOLUME ON SYSTEM SOUNDS ONLY 3) Find the setting for System Sounds.

34 Tip #11 LOWER THE VOLUME ON SYSTEM SOUNDS ONLY 4) Use your mouse to slide the adjustment tab up and down to find the level you want. Click the X to close the Mixer window.

35 Tip #12 DISPLAY VIDEOS ON THE START MENU You may have noticed that a shortcut to videos is not shown on the Start Menu, by default. If you frequently access your videos, you may want to change this. Here’s how:

37 Tip #12 DISPLAY VIDEOS ON THE START MENU Here’s how to add Videos to the list: 1) Right-click on the Start Menu and choose Properties.

38 Tip #12 DISPLAY VIDEOS ON THE START MENU 2) On the Start Menu tab, click “Customize.”

39 Tip #12 DISPLAY VIDEOS ON THE START MENU 3) Using the scroll bar, scroll all the way down to the bottom of the list and find “Videos.”

40 Tip #12 DISPLAY VIDEOS ON THE START MENU 4) If you want to show Videos as a link, choose “Display as a link” and then click OK and OK.

41 Tip #12 DISPLAY VIDEOS ON THE START MENU The right-side of your Start Menu will now look like this – which includes a link to your videos.

42 Tip #13 INCREASE THE NUMBER OF ITEMS IN THE “SEND TO” MENU Normally, when you right-click on a file and choose “Send To” from the menu, there will be a limited number of options.

44 Tip #13 INCREASE THE NUMBER OF ITEMS IN THE “SEND TO” MENU To increase the number of options, hold down the SHIFT key BEFORE you right-click on the file. Then go to Send To:
