The Qualifications and Work of an Evangelist-Minister-Preacher What the preacher is like, based on a number of passages in the New Testament

Introduction 2 Timothy 4:1-5. The preacher is an evangelist. 2 Timothy 4:5. The evangelist is a minister. 1 Corinthians 1:18; Romans 1:16. He is engaged in a saving ministry. 1 Corinthians 1:21. The world may call this a ministry of foolishness but it saves. Romans 10:13-17. No one can go to heaven without it. Luke 8:5-15. The sower of the Word holds the key to life eternal.

Some Qualifications and Work of an Evangelist-Minister-Preacher 2 Timothy 1:5-18. – An evangelist must first of all be a Christian, in possession of the faith (v. 5). – One who possesses the spirit of power, of love and of sound mind (vv. 6-7). – Unashamed of the testimony of the Lord, and of the testimony of fellow Christians, and suffering evil along with the gospel (v. 8-12). – Holding the pattern of sound words and guarding the deposit (vv. 13-14). – Not always trusting in men but trusting in the kindness of the Lord who will move men and see him through (vv. 15- 18).

Some Qualifications and Work of an Evangelist-Minister-Preacher 1 Timothy 4:12-16. – Being nourished in the words of the faith, and of the good doctrine (v. 6). – Refusing the mundane and the secular and exercising oneself unto godliness (vv. 7-8). – Having set his hope on the living God who is the Savior of all men (v. 10). – Not living a despised life, but being an ensample to them that believe, in word, in manner of life, in love, in faith, in purity (vv. 11-12). – Giving heed to reading, to exhortation, to teaching (v. 13). Needs mental industry.

Some Qualifications and Work of an Evangelist-Minister-Preacher 1 Timothy 4:12-16.. – Not neglecting the gift that is in thee (v. 14). Note: Timothys gift was given by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery; it was a spiritual gift. What about yours? It comes through mental industry. And if you have it, use it. – Being diligent in the things mentioned above, giving oneself wholly to them (v. 15). – Taking heed to himself and to his teaching, and continuing in it (v. 16).

Some Qualifications and Work of an Evangelist-Minister-Preacher 1 Timothy 6:1-20. – Being an exhorter and teacher of pure doctrine (vv. 1-5). – Being an example in living a life of godliness with contentment (vv. 7-10). – Fleeing the corruptions of the world, and following after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, and meekness (v. 11). – Fighting the good fight of the faith, laying hold of life eternal, and making the good confession (v. 12). – Faithfulness to the commandment, without spot and reproach, until the end (vv. 13-20).

Some Qualifications and Work of an Evangelist-Minister-Preacher 2 Timothy 2:1-26. – A grace-strengthened person (v. 1). – A mentoring persona who commits to others the deposit that he has (vv. 1-3). – Constant and persevering (v. 3). – Not getting entangled with the secular, the mundane and the mediocre (v. 4). – A God-pleaser who contends for what is lawful (vv. 4-7).

Some Qualifications and Work of an Evangelist-Minister-Preacher 2 Timothy 2:1-26. – Remembering Jesus Christ as his example in suffering and enduring (vv. 8-13) – Not being a striver about words that dont profit anything but only subvert the soul (vv. 14-18, 23-24). – One who purges himself of things dishonorable, living a life sanctified, met for the Masters use, and ready unto good work (vv. 19-22). – One who is gentle toward all, and apt to teach (vv. 34-26).

Some Qualifications and Work of an Evangelist-Minister-Preacher 1 Corinthians 2:1-5. – One who distrusts the superiority of the secular, but trusts in Gods wisdom and testimony (vv. 1, 3). – The subject of his knowing, his discoursing and preaching is Jesus alone (v. 2). – His life and preaching demonstrate the power and wisdom of God and of the Spirit (vv. 4-5).

Some Qualifications and Work of an Evangelist-Minister-Preacher 1 Corinthians 9:19-27. – One who is made free from all men to become a slave for all men (vv. 19-23). – One who joins the spiritual Olympics (vv. 24-26). – A disciplined man (v. 27).

Some Qualifications of an Evangelist- Minister-Preacher 2 Corinthians 12:7-10. – If you are in possession of some thorns in the flesh (personal weaknesses and physical defects), please understand they are there for a good purpose (that I should not be exalted overmuch) (v. 7). – If a messenger of Satan (your enemy whom Satan uses) is there to buffet you, please understand that though this enemys purpose is bad, God allows him because God has a good purpose for you (again, that I should not be exalted overmuch) (v. 7).

Some Qualifications and Work of an Evangelist-Minister-Preacher 2 Corinthians 12:7-10. – Your weaknesses will forever remain and your enemies will forever pester you, but trust in the grace of Jesus, for He will see you through (vv. 8-9). – Glory then in your weaknesses that the power of Christ may rest upon you (v. 9b). – Take pleasure then in your weaknesses, in injuries, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christs sake, for when you are weak, then you are strong. (In my vulnerability and weaknesses lies my strength- ETM) (v. 10).

Some Qualifications and Work of an Evangelist-Minister-Preacher 1 Thessalonians 2:1-19. – Having suffered and having been injuriously treated, yet he should speak with boldness for the gospel (vv. 1-2). – Speaking not as man-pleasers but one approved of God (vv. 3- 6). – A gentle person who is a nourisher of hearts that have been hurt (vv. 7-8, 11-12). – Laboring night and day, and in travail, not wanting to be a burden to the church (vv. 9-10). – He is in the business of imitating and telling men to imitate good men and good churches in Jesus (vv. 13-18). – Has made the church his hope, his joy, his glory and his crown of rejoicing (v. 19).

Some Qualifications of an Evangelist- Minister-Preacher Titus 2:1-15. – One who speaks what should be sound teaching (vv. 1- 10). – Denies impiety and worldly desires (vv. 11-12a). – Living soberly and piously, not in the past for it is already done, not in the future for it is yet to be, but for the present age which we are privileged to be living in now (v. 12b).

Some Qualifications of an Evangelist- Minister-Preacher Titus 2:1-15. – Like other Christians, he waits for God (vv. 13-14). – Constantly speaking and exhorting and convicting with all authority the hearts of all men; not letting anyone despise him (v. 15).
