Division Patterns Lesson 3.2 Mrs. Christman

24 ÷ 6= Division Patterns 4 240 ÷ 6=4040 2400 ÷ 6=400 24000 ÷ 6=4000 240000 ÷ 6=40000 Zeros in the dividend Divide the non- zero numbers, then add the number of zeros in the dividend to the quotient

7 ÷ 1=7 70 ÷ 10=7 700 ÷ 10=7 Zeros in the dividend and the divisor Divide the non-zero numbers. ×× ×× Cross out an equal number of zeros in both the dividend and the divisor. Then add the number of zeros that are left in the dividend to the quotient. (Notice that the number of zeros in the quotient is equal to the number of zeros in the dividend minus the number of zeros in the divisor.) 0 Cross out an equal number of zeros in both the dividend and the divisor. Divide the non-zero numbers.

18 ÷ 2=9 180 ÷ 2=9 1800 ÷ 20=9 Zeros in the dividend and the divisor Divide the non-zero numbers. 18000 ÷ 200= 9 ×× 0 Then add the number of zeros that are left in the dividend to the quotient. Divide the non-zero numbers. Then add the number of zeros that are left in the dividend to the quotient. 0

30) 150 Division with zeros in the dividend and divisor

30) 150 To figure what your first number will be cover the 0 in 30 & The 0 in 150. Division with zeros in the dividend and divisor

30) 150 Now ask how many 3’s will go into 15. Division with zeros in the dividend and divisor

30) 150 Be sure to put that number directly above The 0 that was covered not the 5. 5 Division with zeros in the dividend and divisor

40) 2800 Division with zeros in the dividend and divisor To figure what your first number will be cover the 0 in 40 & the 0 in 2800.

40) 2800 Now ask how many 4’s will go into 28. Division with zeros in the dividend and divisor

40) 2800 Be sure to put that number directly above The 0 not the 8. 7 Division with zeros in the dividend and divisor

40) 2800 7 Division with zeros in the dividend and divisor 00 Any number divided by zero is zero. Bring remaining zeros in the quotient up.

20) 18000 Division with zeros in the dividend and divisor Now ask how many 2’s will go into 18.

20) 18000 Division with zeros in the dividend and divisor To figure what your first number will be cover the 0 in 20 & the 0 in 18,000.
