Immunity Requirements CON students must fulfill two separate immunity requirements Two Separate Offices –Office of Medical Immunizations –College of Nursing

Office of Medical Immunizations UIC Medical Immunization Form Required by Illinois Department of Public Health Same requirements for all students in all programs throughout the university Mandated by Illinois law – to protect the public health

CON Proof of Immunity Form Mandated by clinical sites Mirrors requirements that clinical sites place on their own employees In place to protect the health of both workers and patients Exceeds requirements of UIC Medical Immunization Form No age exemptions (except Polio)

Tetanus/Diptheria (Td) Booster required every 10 years For your protection in case of a needle stick injury

Polio Vaccination required by Illinois Department of Public Health Pre-1957 Exemption Must provide record of pediatric vaccination with OPV/IPV vaccine series If no records, require single adult IPV booster

TB Testing (PPD) Baseline 2-step purified protein derivative (PPD) testing required –Two PPD skin tests – 1-3 weeks apart After 2-step, annual single-step required If positive PPD –Baseline Chest X-Ray –Annual TB Symptom questionnaire

Titers Blood tests Test blood for presence of antibodies (immunity) to specific illnesses Positive titer = Immune

Titers CON only accepts titers as proof of immunity –Vaccine history not acceptable –Disease history not acceptable Blood tests are the GOLD STANDARD of immunity Clinical sites are assured that patients are protected

Required Titers Rubeola (Measles) Mumps Rubella Varicella Hepatitis B Surface Antibody

Measles, Mumps, Rubella IgG Blood Test Immunity conferred by vaccination or previous infection Negative titer requires MMR vaccine Re-Titer in 4-6 weeks

Varicella IgG Blood Test Immunity conferred by vaccination or previous Chicken Pox infection Negative titer requires Varivax vaccine Re-Titer in 4-6 weeks

Hepatitis B For YOUR protection Vaccine preventable illness that can lead to liver cancer Vaccine series requires 3 vaccines at 0, 1, and 6 months

Hepatitis B Vaccine series must begin prior to clinicals Quantitative titer required 4-6 weeks after completion of series Negative titer requires re- vaccination followed by repeat titer

CPR Required for patient safety Mandated by contract with clinical sites 2 acceptable certifications –American Heart Association Healthcare Provider –Red Cross Professional Rescuer –NO OTHER CARD WILL BE ACCEPTED

CPR AHA/RC allow bi-annual renewal Clinical sites require annual renewal despite date on card CPR cards must be recent enough so as not to expire during the term in which you are admitted

Consequences If records are not submitted or are incomplete –No Clinicals –No Registration –No Grades Reported
