2 Updating Resources The Knowledge Base IRD Record Describes Resource Links to Native Interface Defines Search Target Provides Authentication Configuration Record Transforms Query Normalizes Results Creates Open URL Defines Access Method

3 Updating Resources IRD fields for Searching and Linking Change IRD Fields for Searching and Linking: Activate the resource Link to the Native Interface – change if needed Hostname:port – check against the Configuration Notes (?) Database code – provided by CKB (when needed) Authentication – enter your username/password (if needed) Change Descriptive IRD fields: Modify the IRD record as needed for your users See “ Key IRD Fields ” (slides 19 & 20) for suggestions

4 Updating Resources Authentication Subscription resources require authentication to search Authentication for MetaLib may be different than usual Z39 and XML gateways can require username/password IP registration = IP of MetaLib server, not user terminal Subscription resources may search “new” locations Z39 = searches Z39 server (not web) WEBCONFIG_XML = searches XML gateway (not homepage) “Free” MetaLib resources do not require authentication IP authentication may be needed to reach full text

Updating Resources Working with Existing Resources 5 Existing Resource: Log into Management Interface In the Main Menu, select Find Resource Search for existing resource

Updating Resources Login to Metalib Management Interface: http://metalib.sdln.net/M http://metalib.sdln.net/M 6 Choose Find a Resource

Updating Resources Search for Resources 7 Search for a resource, example: Inactive resources, published by EBSCO, any words: Library Abstracts

Updating Resources Search Results 8 Results of search: 7 resources, choose resource to work with:

Updating Resources Resource List 9 Resource to review/update: Library, Information Science & Technology Abstracts Click ? In the Resource List Change the Status from I (inactive) to A (active) or T (testing) to activate resource in the user interface

Updating Resources ? Information Regarding Resources 10

Updating Resources Individual IRD Subscription 11 Go to an individual IRD by selecting S (subscription) in the IRD Action column

Updating Resources IRD Fields to Add/Edit 12 In the IRD Add Link to Native Interface URL When the name of the resource appears in the user interface, this is its hyperlink Add Hostname:port information This is where MetaLib sends the federated search request to Add Database Code if necessary Vendors with multiple resources on the same server will usually have a database code to differentiate between their databases Add Authentication if necessary Some vendors require a username/password, while others will rely on IP authentication

Updating Resources Subscription Tab 13

Updating Resources User Interface 14 In the User Interface Test resource in the user interface

Updating Resources User Interface 15 Search the database in the user interface:

Updating Resources Troubleshooting Non-Working Resources Case One: It Never Worked. Do other things from this vendor work? Is your password correct? Did you register your IP for federated search access? Did you double-check the IRD? Have you read the Configuration Notes? Contact SDLN, the vendor 17

Updating Resouces Troubleshooting Non-Working Resources Case Two: It Used to Work. It Stopped. Has anything else stopped working? Have you run a CKB Update? Have you made the “Manual changes needed”? Has your subscription lapsed? Did you change your firewall? Contact SDLN, the vendor 18
