What’s Going on Behind Wireless This presentation contains: Frequently used terms that are components of Wireless 911 Wireless Call Flow Process Questions Public Safety Solutions
3
What’s Going on Behind Wireless Frequently Used Terms HCAS – Hybrid Call-Path Associated Signaling NCAS – Non Call-Path Associated Signaling Public Safety Solutions Two Different Technologies:
4
What’s Going on Behind Wireless Frequently Used Terms MDN – Mobile Directory Number. “Callback” number of Cell Phone. pANI – pseudo ANI. Sometimes Referred to as a “routing number” A number used in wireless 911 call setup that can be used to complete routing to a specific PSAP. Two Kinds: ESRK – Emergency Services Routing Key. ESRD – Emergency Services Routing Digit. Public Safety Solutions
5
What’s Going on Behind Wireless Frequently Used Terms MSC – Mobile Switching Center. Wireless Carrier’s switch that provides connectivity between mobile users on a wireless network, with the Public Switch Telephone Network (PSTN) One switch usually covers multiple geographic areas. 6
What’s Going on Behind Wireless Frequently Used Terms S/R – Selective Router. Also sometimes referred to as a “911 Tandem” The switch that routes the 911 call to the appropriate PSAP based on the Emergency Service Number (ESN) ESN – Emergency Service Number. A three or four digit number that allows the S/R to route a phone call to the appropriate PSAP. Public Safety Solutions
7
What’s Going on Behind Wireless Frequently Used Terms MF – Multi-Frequency Trunks. A signaling code for communication from S/R to PSAP using 8 digit ANI. EMF – Enhanced Multi-Frequency Trunks. A signaling code for communication from S/R to PSAP using 10 or 20 digit ANI. SS7 – Signaling System 7. Type of signaling code used to communicate from MSC to S/R. Public Safety Solutions
8
What’s Going on Behind Wireless Frequently Used Terms 3PDB – Third Party Database Provider. A third party company that provides ALI information. When the initial “dip” is sent from the PSAP to the SBC/ALISA database, that dip is then steered to the correct 3PDB which will return the actual ALI record. Public Safety Solutions

10
What’s Going on Behind Wireless Phase 0 (Zero) Equivalent to Wireline Basic 9-1-1. FCC minimum requirement of all wireless carriers. Provides voice only to designated PSAP. Usually routed via a 10-digit administrative line at the PSAP. Public Safety Solutions

What’s Going on Behind Wireless Frequently Used Terms(Phase II) Latitude – Y coordinate. Distance from equator. Above equator = “+” (positive number) Below equator = “-” (negative number) Longitude – X coordinate. Distance from Prime Meridian. East of Prime Meridian = “+” (positive number) West of Prime Meridian = “-” (negative number) MPC – Mobile Positioning Center. Facility owned by the Wireless Carrier, or 3PDB that uses Position Determining Equipment (PDE) to provide Latitude and Longitude of mobile caller. Public Safety Solutions
