21-06-0762-00-0000 AN Concepts The AN architecture is built on three major innovations: The concept of a single, universal type of networking entity, the Ambient Network (AN) Consequently, a single universal networking reference point, the Ambient Network Interface (ANI) A set of naming and identification capabilities, independent of the underlying infrastructure Ambient Network Ambient Network ANI Exchange of messages

21-06-0762-00-0000 Phase 2 Project Structure
11
21-06-0762-00-0000 Areas relevant to IEEE 802.21 WP-B: mobility management Has developed advanced trigger delivery and processing functionality Supports filtering, aggregation and delivery of triggers Users can request triggers they are interested in, and also provide clues as to how they should be processed WP-D: Context, Policy and Network Management Is investigating information bases to support AN functionality Part of this includes information to support handover decisions Concept of an Ambient Network Information Service The triggering functionality is considered as a “context provider”
12
21-06-0762-00-0000 The Ambient Network Information Service Infrastructure L3 L2 Timeline today GSM RR-Mgmt “simple” voice service handover Timeline MIP (same device) 3G B’tooth WiFi “clunky” data service handover IP SIP, IMS (between devices) 3G WiMAX WiFi Cost QoS Capab Sec 802.21 “enhanced” data service handover 3GWiMAX WiFi Cost QoS Perf Sec ANISI “effective” data service handover static IEs dynamic IEs means to support it what info supported service
13
21-06-0762-00-0000 How AN plans to achieve the objective More dynamic IEs need appropriate infrastructure support for information management Ambient Networks Information Service Infrastructure distributed database with optimised data dissemination algorithms allows for fast retrieval and fast update of dynamic information dynamic trigger management allows for fast and personalised notification of trigger changes aggregation of information allows for service specific IEs (i.e. is this network currently good for this service?) as well as for traffic reduction and flexibility security and access control to IEs allows phased disclosure of knowledge as authentication steps take place (i.e. L2 attach – access to limited knowledge, L3 attach – access to more detailed knowledge)
14
21-06-0762-00-0000 Focus on ANISI – the Ambient Networks Information Service Infrastructure –Carry out data translation to address diverse nature of managed information as well as migration Inclusive of pre-processing components –Carry out data fusion for common purposes DHT lookups P2P exchange of info src sink Distributed storage capability –two-tiered to address scalability, ability to cross administrative domains (AN feature), secured for access control –Carry out filtered trigger notification
15
21-06-0762-00-0000 What advantages does it bring To the end-user ability to make more intelligent and efficient (handover) decisions based on current context for surrounding networks opportunity to use more innovative services that seamlessly “survive” over heterogeneous networks in the event of component failure, available knowledge allows the user to infer what went wrong To the network operator more accurate monitoring of resource usage opportunity for corrective actions to balance resource usage and customer satisfaction

21-06-0762-00-0000 Conclusions in a Nutshell Link Layer Triggers State Change Predictive Network Initiated Network Information Available Networks Neighbor Maps Network Services Handover Commands Client Initiated Network Initiated Vertical Handovers 802.21 Background AN Triggers Network context More innovative services for the user Optimised usage of resources for operators Ambient Networks contribution
17
21-06-0762-00-0000 Next Steps Ambient Networks has a number of concepts and ideas that we would like to bring to IEEE 802.21 for comment or inclusion in your standard How should this proceed? Need to work together to identify exactly where AN concepts provide value to IEEE 802.21 What are IEEE 802.21 plans beyond finalisation of first draft?
