Step One: Understanding The Mentoring Process To understand the mentoring process, you need to know: What it takes to be a mentor? What are the mentee’s responsibilities? What does the mentee get out of it?

What It Takes To Be A Mentor? Desire Time Reality check Individual career development plan

What Are The Mentee’s Responsibilities? Willing to learn Able to accept feedback Willing to “stretch” Able to identify goals

What Does the Mentee Get Out of It? Listening ear Valuable direction Gaps filled in Doors opened Different perspective

Step Two: Review Rules of Engagement Commit to one-year partnership Bi-monthly Meetings Six-month check-up Discuss “no-fault” termination

Step Three: Making The Match General Guidelines n Satisfy formal requests nHave the time for the relationship n Weigh career field, experience, alma mater, expectations in matching pairs

Step Four: Have Your First Meeting May be in person, by e-mail, or by phone Choose a neutral setting (if face-to-face) This should be time of getting to know each other Talk about any expectations you may have Discuss when you will meet and how often Share career histories

Step Five: Continue the Partnership In the second and third meetings begin to define the mentee’s short and long term goals Mentor will use listening, counseling, coaching, career advising, and goal setting to help mentee develop Individual Career Development Plan Utilize mentoring guide notional planning schedule Fill in the gaps Expand available options Explore referral resources Attend professional development seminars

Step Six: Have a Six-month Check-up Describe progress Review Career Development Plan Ask questions Conduct the six-month check up

Step Seven: Conclude the Mentoring Partnership Many partnerships continue Notify if you decide to end it early Give feedback Review and revise goals Conduct review at the end of the year
