4  In simple terms- A HYPERBOLE is an extreme exaggeration to make a point and probably could never actually happen.  I can remember the meaning of HYPERBOLE in a goofy way. If a person is “hyper” they are demonstrating extreme, crazy behavior. Hyperboles are extreme and crazy sayings.

5  I waited eternity for the bus!  I’m so hungry, I could eat a horse!  It took my sister a million years to get ready!  His brain was the size of an ant!  Her shoes looked like boats!  Hyperboles are a great way to jazz up your writing!

6  You could have knocked me over with a feather!  I will die if he asks me to go with him to the dance!  Her eyes were as wide as saucers!

7  What does the hyperbole mean-  He’s got a truckload of money! He is very rich or wealthy. He can easily carry his money. His money is heavy.

9  That test was so hard _______________.  My teacher is so mean ________________.  The boy’s ears are so big _____________.  My principal is so busy _______________.  The town was so small ______________.

How does Shel Silverstein use hyperbole to get the theme across? How does hyperbole make this message very clear?

16  Examine the selections taken from well- known tall tales.  Read the selections with someone next to you.  Discuss the following- What are some hyperbole examples used in these tall tales? Discuss their meaning.
