2. How to get started Pick a place to volunteer Call and introduce yourself and find out when you can begin volunteering Read the community service packet Write a community service proposal Track the hours you work - Sign in and out each time you volunteer!

3. Community Service paperwork All students are required to read the community service packet, write a proposal and receive approval PRIOR to volunteering Turn your proposal in to Mrs. Weaver before you begin Community Service Packets Contain the following information: – Bright Futures scholarship criteria –Community Service guidelines w/ Suggested Social Issues –Proposals –List of local community service opportunities where you can volunteer

4. Community Service Where do I get the community service paperwork? –East Bay High School Website –Guidance Office –College and Career Center

5. Community Service Do’s and Don’t’s Must address a social issue Preference is that you volunteer with a non-profit organization NOT a for-profit business Must be before or after school No political or religious organizations that directly benefits a candidate or promotes a religious organization Must not be part of a grade or curriculum requirement No payment received Must not be court ordered

6. Volunteer hours or Community Service hours What’s the difference? –Community Service Identifies and addresses a social issue in the community Requires students to look beyond themselves and reach out to an issue faced by society today Social issues include poverty, domestic abuse, elder care, education, environment, animal abuse, disease prevention, etc. These hours will be on student ‘s permanent record and meet the criteria for the Florida Bright Futures scholarship –Volunteer Hours Does not address a social issue Examples: Helping a relative, concession duties These hours will NOT meet the criteria for the Florida Bright Futures scholarship

7. Awards and Scholarships Community service projects: –Make a difference in your community –Provide leadership experiences for students –Enhance your college applications –Improve the chances on scholarship applications –Help you meet Bright Futures eligibility

8. Bright Futures Criteria 2014-15 Florida Academic Scholarship 100 volunteer hours Florida Medallion Scholarship 75 volunteer hours Florida Gold Seal Vocational Scholarship 30 volunteer hours
