DEFINITION OF A FREE KICK “ The way play is restarted after the referee has stopped play for an infraction”

“QUICK” FREE KICK v Kicking team has a right to a quick restart if they wish to use it u Opponents must move at least 10 yards away u Opponents have no right to form a wall v As referee, encourage the “quick” restart Exception: You need to card a player for misconduct

“QUICK” FREE KICK v Do not interfere unless: u Kicking team requests enforcement u Encroachment is blatant and obvious u You are giving a card u Injury v No violation of the Law if kick taken quickly and ball goes directly to opponent closer than 10 yards v Remember to signal if IFK

“CEREMONIAL” FREE KICK v As quickly as possible, clearly show everyone that they must wait for whistle v Be “first brick” in the wall - 10 yards v Bring opponents to you v Move to your next position v Signal for restart u When you are ready u As soon as possible DO NOT Repeat … DO NOT Pace off this distance!

RESTART MECHANICS -- GENERAL v Point direction! u Players want/need to know if they are “attacking” or “defending” v Indicate IFK if appropriate u Players want/need to know if they can score directly from this kick v Indicate position of ball v Get out of the way and don’t interfere! But don’t hold the signal unnecessarily Only if necessary – no “two-handed” signals!

BALL IN PLAY VS. GOAL SCORED v Ball is “in play” when: u Kicked and moves and u Leaves penalty area (if appropriate) v Goal can be scored when: u Ball is “in play” u Ball is touched by 2nd player on IFK u Ball is kicked into opponents’ goal

REVIEW v Restart method after what type of stoppage? u An offense (Law 12, offside, others) v How many types of free kick are there? u Two -- what are they and what is the major difference between them? u DFK, goal can be scored directly u IFK, ball must touch another player before a goal can be scored

REVIEW v From where is the free kick taken? u General – where the offense occurred u Exception 1 – if in own goal area, anywhere in goal area u Exception 2 – if in opponent’ goal area, on goal area line nearest to offense v Can the ball be moving when taken? u No, it must be stationary v What direction must it be kicked? u Any direction is acceptable

REVIEW v Can the kicker touch it a second time? u No, IFK to opponents v How far away must opponents be? u General -- 10 yards u Exception – if in own penalty area, 10 yards and outside the penalty area u Exception – if within 10 yards of goal, closer than 10 yards only if on goal line between goal posts

REVIEW v Can the kick be taken before opponents move 10 yards? u Yes, but … v Who can ask for 10 yards? u Kicking team may request, but… u Restart is now “ceremonial” and can’t be taken except by your signal

REVIEW v What is the signal for an Indirect Free Kick? How long should it be held? u Until the ball has touched another player, or u The ball has gone out of play v If a free kick is taken within a team’s own penalty area, when is it in play? u When it leaves the penalty area
