5 1/15/2015 16:37 Chapter 14Network Management5 Network Management Entity (NME) Tasks 0 Collect statistics on communications and network-related activities. 0 Store statistics locally. 0 Respond to commands from the Network Control Center (NCC), including commands to: 1. Transit collected statistics to Network Control Center. 2. Change a parameter (e.g., a timer used in a transport protocol). 3. Provide status information (e.g., parameter values, active links). 4. General artificial traffic to perform a test. 0 Send messages to the NCC when local conditions undergo a significant change.

6 1/15/2015 16:37 Chapter 14Network Management6 Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) 0 Network Management Model includes the following: 0 Management Station: * MS serves as the interface for the human network manager into the network management system; * MS has a set of management applications for data analysis, fault recovery, etc. * An interface by which the NW manager may monitor and control the network. * The capability of translating the NW manager’s requirements into the actual monitoring and control of remote elements in the network. * A database of information extracted from the MIBs. 0 Management Agent: Key platforms (hosts, bridges, routers, hubs) may be equipped with SNMP so that they may be managed from a management station. 0 Management Information Base (MIB) is the collection of objects (resources or data variables) that represent aspects of the managed agent. 0 Network Management Protocol is used for linking the management station and agents. It includes the following key capacities: “Get”, “Set”, and “Notify.”
