The following nine problems are designed to help you make sure that you have internalized the material in this presentation. We suggest that you treat these problems as if they were a test. © 2007 Herbert I. Gross After you have worked on these problems check your answers against the ones that are given. Then read through our solutions and commentary in the Problem/Solution PowerPoint Presentation. next

Problem #1 © 2007 Herbert I. Gross next Find the sum of the first 100 multiples of 7. That is, if… S = 7 + 14 + 21 +... 686 + 693 + 700 compute the value of S.

Problem #2a © 2007 Herbert I. Gross next In 1848, the British physicist, William Thomson Kelvin developed an absolute temperature scale that started at absolute zero. Known as the Kelvin scale, it is widely used in many fields of science. It is theorized that this is the temperature at which all matter would cease to have motion. It corresponds to - 273°C and denoted is denoted by 0°K in honor of Kelvin. Knowing that a degree on the Kelvin scale is the same as a degree on the Celsius scale, express the Kelvin scale (K) in terms of the Celsius scale (C).

Problem #2b © 2007 Herbert I. Gross next In 1848 the British physicist William Thomson Kelvin developed an absolute temperature scale that started at absolute zero. Known as the Kelvin scale, it is widely used in many fields of science. It is theorized that this is the temperature at which all matter would cease to have motion. It corresponds to - 273°C and is denoted by 0°K in honor of Kelvin. What is the Fahrenheit temperature when the temperature is 293°K? next

Problem #3 © 2007 Herbert I. Gross next A new temperature scale, called the N-scale, has the property that when the Celsius temperature (C) = 0, N = 15 and when C = 100, N = 215. What is the temperature on the N- scale when it is 20°C? next
7
Problem #4 © 2007 Herbert I. Gross next With the same N-scale as in the previous problem, what is the temperature on the Celsius scale when it is 37°N?

Problem #5 © 2007 Herbert I. Gross next The relationship between x and y is linear. Express the relationship in the form y = mx + b if we know that (1) when x = 1, y = 2 and (2) when x = 12, y = 57
