DCAS-Alt1 Updates  DCAS-Alt1 essentially is same as previous years  Highlights of changes include: Grade 11 added for Reading and Mathematics Test windows Not all content areas include Field Test items Accommodation Tracking system added Stopping rules Deadlines for decisions regarding changing between DCAS and DCAS-Alt1 2

4. Accommodations Tracking  2014-15: For the first time, DOE will track some accommodations in the Assessment Accommodations Database  To document test environment features needed by student that are not accommodations

Accommodations Tracking For DCAS-ALT1  Substitution or presentation of response cards  Large Print  Magnification  ASL  Braille and tactile graphics  ELL-related accommodations Translator/interpreter items Translator/interpreter reading passages Translation of construct-irrelevant words Definition of construct-irrelevant words 4

6. Task 1 Rule  If a student fails to respond to all one- or two- point items in the first task, then the student will end the assessment after the first task.  Intended to apply to students with significant communication needs

7. New Stopping Rule  Stopping rule changed from 3 points to 6 points.  Responding successfully on concluding task defined as earning 6 points on this task  Student must respond successfully on “concluding task” to move on to another task.  Reduces the possibility of student test lasting longer due to correct guesses  Starting rule not changed (still 3 points)

8. New Item Types  Intended to allow DCAS-Alt1 to measure a wider range of abilities with greater precision at high end and low end of the scale  Lower Ability: Scaffolded questions Seen by Students starting at Task 1 Transition between engagement items and selected response items The “We do” questions  Higher Ability: Seen by students starting at Task 6 Four-option questions  Try 1: four options  Try 2: three options Options composed of words only

DCAS-ALT1 Student/Teacher Rosters  Mid-November: DOE sends district a spreadsheet of students flagged for Alternate assessment  District point person must Verify each student is actively enrolled in district Verify grade level and building Verify student is still in the alternate (has accommodation 500 or 5.00) Type into the spreadsheet the name of the test administrator for that student Return the spreadsheet to the DOE before the December deadline  DCAS-Alt1 test kit is assigned to a TEACHER not to a student  This is the ONLY way DOE can know which teachers are administering the alternate assessment and to which students. 8

10. Switching between General and Alternate Assessments  Document the decision to switch BEFORE the opening of the Spring Window  After you administer a spring test, it is too late to switch tests 9
