Computer Basics Hit List of Items to Talk About ● What and when to use left, right, middle, double and triple click? – These are all mouse actions and to click means one click. – Left If the instructions state click the mouse that almost always means left click. Left click instructs the computer to select the object under the mouse pointer. This is normally done first to identify to the computer that object on which the user will apply more action (for example to Delete). If the mouse is over text in a word processor when left clicked, the cursor is moved to that location.

Computer Basics Hit List of Items to Talk About ● What and when to use left, right, middle, double and triple click? – These are all mouse actions and to click means one click. – Right The right mouse button is used to open a context menu if there is one associated with the object under the mouse pointer. The items found on a context menu are determined by the program that controls the object on which you right click. The items are normally actions that can be performed like, delete, show properties, change color, copy and paste.

Computer Basics Hit List of Items to Talk About ● What and when to use left, right, middle, double and triple click? – These are all mouse actions and to click means one click. – Middle On most mouse devices, this is a wheel primarily used to scroll up/down pages that are too long to completely display within the monitor. Normally the wheel can also be pushed to signal a middle click to the computer. The actions performed by the middle click are dependent on the application in which the middle click is performed and by the setting of the computer mouse options.

Computer Basics Hit List of Items to Talk About ● What and when to use left, right, middle, double and triple click? – These are all mouse actions and to click means one click. – Double This actions requires that you press-release-press-release the left mouse button in rapid succession. For someone new to computers this can be an area of frustration when trying to find that magic rhythm. Mouse software options allow you to set the sequence speed that is to be used by the computer to recognize your double click. Double click tells the computer to run, execute or open an application, folder or file.

Computer Basics Hit List of Items to Talk About ● What and when to use left, right, middle, double and triple click? – These are all mouse actions and to click means one click. – Triple This actions requires that you press-release-press-release- press-release the left mouse button in rapid succession. Triple click is not used that often, its use depends on the application that controls the object on which you triple click. Triple clicking a line in a word processor will normally highlight (select) the entire paragraph in which the line is contained.

Computer Basics Hit List of Items to Talk About ● What are mouse options settings? – Mouse options allow for the personalization of mouse actions to meet your specific physical requirements. ● Change to a right-handed user ● Change/add functions for left, right and middle click ● Control action, speed and display of mouse pointer ● Set the double click speed – Mouse options can be accessed via the Windows Control Panel.

Computer Basics Hit List of Items to Talk About ● What and how to use save, save as, export, import, print, print preview? – These actions are almost aways found under the “File” menu item for the application you are working within. – Save When you make changes (adding, deleting or formatting) to a document, those changes are stored in the computer's RAM as a temporary volatile version of the file. The actual file still exists on the hard drive as it was prior to the changes. To make the changes permanent and non- volatile you must save the file you are working on. The save function will replace the hard drive version of the file with the information in temporary RAM.

Computer Basics Hit List of Items to Talk About ● What and how to use save, save as, export, import, print, print preview? – These actions are almost aways found under the “File” menu item for the application you are working within. – Save As This function will save a copy of the file located on the hard drive back to the hard drive but with a different name. I like to use this function when I am about to make some major changes or changes I am not sure I will be satisfied with until they are all done. If the changes I make are bad, the original file with the old name is not lost.

Computer Basics Hit List of Items to Talk About ● What and how to use save, save as, export, import, print, print preview? – These actions are almost aways found under the “File” menu item for the application you are working within. – Export The results of this function depends on the application to which it belongs. For the most part it is to extract the text, pictures or other graphics and save them to the hard drive in a format not always associated with the application. For example to export the file as a PDF or as a Comma Separated Values (CSV) file.

Computer Basics Hit List of Items to Talk About ● What and how to use save, save as, export, import, print, print preview? – These actions are almost aways found under the “File” menu item for the application you are working within. – Import This function is the reverse of Export and is used to insert the contents of a hard drive file into your application as text, data for a contact list, data for a spreadsheet or a graphic.

Computer Basics Hit List of Items to Talk About ● What and how to use save, save as, export, import, print, print preview? – These actions are almost aways found under the “File” menu item for the application you are working within. – Print Use this function to output to a printer the application file you are viewing. This function will by default send the print output to the printer identified on you computer system as the default printer. If there are multiple printers on your system, you can select the desired printer from the Printer Name drop down found on the Print dialog box. The Print function in Windows Explorer will also output the file to the printer using the associated application.

Computer Basics Hit List of Items to Talk About ● What and how to use save, save as, export, import, print, print preview? – These actions are almost aways found under the “File” menu item for the application you are working within. – Print Preview Use this function to see how the printout will look prior to sending to the Printer. I find this valuable to see before hand how many pages will be printed and especially how a web page will print. Some information you wish to print may only be on a couple of pages rather than print the whole document, print only the desired pages.

Computer Basics Hit List of Items to Talk About ● What and how to use drag and drop? – This is a mouse action that can be performed in Windows Explorer and in applications that support this function. – You use this function to move a file, folder, highlighted text or graphic to a new location. – To use this function in Windows Explorer, simply click and hold the left mouse button down on the file or folder. While still holding the button down, move the mouse to the new folder. Once in the new folder, let the left mouse button up and the file or folder will be removed from the old location and placed in the new. – To use this function in an application, select the text or graphic/image and use the left mouse button as above.

Computer Basics Hit List of Items to Talk About ● What and how to select text or an object? – You select text or an object to identify to Windows Explorer or the application you want to do something with that text or object. – Selecting an object like a file, folder or graphic/picture is rather straight forward, you simply left click the object. – Windows Explorer/application will highlight the object by changing its background or surrounding it with a box with adjusting handles. – Select text as follows: ● Double click to select a word ● Triple click to select a sentence ● Paint through the text area while holding the left mouse button down ● Click at the start of the area to place the cursor at the starting point, then hold the shift key as you click at the end position ● To select all text and objects, hold the Ctrl key and press “A”

Computer Basics Hit List of Items to Talk About ● What and how to use copy, cut, paste, paste special, select all? – These actions are almost aways found under the “Edit” menu item for the application you are working within. – Copy, Cut and Paste are also found in Windows Explorer via the “Context Menu” (Right Click) and are used to invoke these actions on files and folders – Copy ● Select the text or object then click on the “Edit” menu, then click on “copy”. ● Select the text or object then press the Ctrl and “C” key at the same time. ● Select the text or object then bring up the Context Menu (Right Click on the selected item) and click on Copy.

Computer Basics Hit List of Items to Talk About ● What and how to use copy, cut, paste, paste special, select all? – These actions are almost aways found under the “Edit” menu item for the application you are working within. – Copy, Cut and Paste are also found in Windows Explorer via the “Context Menu” (Right Click) and are used to invoke these actions on files and folders – Paste ● Copy or Cut the text/object before you attempt to paste. ● Click in the document where you want to paste the text or object then click on “Edit” menu, then Paste. ● Click in the document where you want to paste the text or object then press the Ctrl and “V” keys at the same time. ● Use the Context Menu (Right Click) in Windows Explorer.

Computer Basics Hit List of Items to Talk About ● What and how to use copy, cut, paste, paste special, select all? – These actions are almost aways found under the “Edit” menu item for the application you are working within. – When text or an object is copied the items formatting is also captured. When pasted the same formatting will be applied which may not be what you want. When you use Paste Special you will be given a dialog box to select the format of the item to be pasted. – Paste Special ● Copy or Cut the text/object before you attempt to paste special. ● Click in the document where you want to paste the text or object then click on “Edit” menu, then Paste Special. ● Click in the document where you want to paste the text or object then press the Alt, Ctrl and “V” keys at the same time.

Computer Basics Hit List of Items to Talk About ● What and how to use copy, cut, paste, paste special, select all? – These actions are almost aways found under the “Edit” menu item for the application you are working within. – Select All ● Selects all text and objects in the document. ● Depending on the application all means all pages and in other applications only the page in view. ● Make sure the cursor is on the page you wish to select all. ● Click on the “Edit” menu then “Select All”. ● Press the Ctrl and “A” keys at the same time.

Computer Basics Hit List of Items to Talk About ● Where did my work window go? – Microsoft Windows allows you run or use multiple applications all at the same time. – When you open an application it is started on top of any other application currently running and is said to have focus. – If the application is full screen, the others are there just covered up by the application that has focus. – If the application is less than full screen, you may see the other applications behind the application that has focus. – If you click on a window in the background it will come forward and will have focus which means it may cover up the application you were just working with making it seem you lost that application.

Computer Basics Hit List of Items to Talk About ● Watch what you install? – Most sites that provide program downloads help pay for their site by displaying advertisements. These advertisements are very creative and present themselves almost like a requirement for the program you wish to download. – Advertisements like - “Before you download run a free scan” – Most of these programs are Registry scan programs and it is almost a guarantee that the scan will find something. To fix the identified problem will require that you purchase the scan software. – The question - “Is the item identified by the scan program really a problem or just one of those minor things that happen in Windows?”.

Computer Basics Hit List of Items to Talk About ● Watch what you install? – More often then not the scan item identified is minor and not worth worrying about. – On Registry scan program is all that is required on a PC, but if you don't watch what you install you could end up with many and each one costing you $40 per year to keep active. – My experience has shown that many of the items the scan program identifies as a problem is just a dead link, not pointing to anything and not causing any problem. – Many times the Registry scan program will delete a link that seems dead but is not and the results is an application that does not work as expected.

Computer Basics Hit List of Items to Talk About ● Watch what you install? – Another item you should watch carefully is which check-boxes are by default checked during the install process. – Many install web browser toolbars or programs that offer computer scans, file backups, computer speed improvements or permission to send out program improvement information. – Most if not all of this extra stuff is clutter, adds to rather than resolve your computer problems. – Many get loaded each time your computer first boots up adding to the start up time, eating up RAM resources and slowing down the shut down time.
