1. Read the text. Christmas Christmas is a Christian holiday that honours the birth of Jesus, and a cultural holiday for non – Christians. Christmas is celebrated all over the world and traditions are different from country to country. The season of preparing for advent is called Advent. It begins on a Sunday about four weeks before Christmas Day (25 December). Advent is a time when many people are very busy. They clean and decorate their houses, buy food and presents, write cards and letters, and cook the Christmas feast. Special Advent Calendars are made for children with pictures of treats for each day of Advent. Picture 1

Christmas is the most important holiday for Christians because it’s a day when Jesus Christ was born. But it’s the most favourite holiday too. In Great Britain a lot of people spend this day shopping. They decorate the Christmas tree, hang holly and ivy in the room, and mistletoe is hanged over the door. If you catch a girl under it, you are allowed to kiss her. Before children go to bed, they hung up Christmas stockings at the end of their beds and believe that Father Christmas fills up the stockings with presents. Children unwrap presents in the morning. In the USA Christmas is not a national holiday. Almost all shops are closed and people have a rest on this day. Americans and British origin follow the same traditions as their ancestors. The person who brings children presents is called Santa Claus. Children hang their stockings on a mantelpiece of the fireplace, and they leave milk and cookies for Santa to eat.

Christmas dinner A typical Christmas dinner in Great Britain is a roast turkey (or chicken) with a great variety of vegetables including Brussels sprouts, carrots, cauliflower cheese, parsnips and roast potatoes with stuffing and other trimmings such as small sausages wrapped in bacon. Christmas pudding, or plum pudding or mince pies are a traditional dessert served with brandy butter. Picture 6 – Christmas pudding Picture 5 – A roast turkey

Christmas carols Christmas carols are special songs which are sung during the Christmas season. The songs are about Jesus ant the time when he was born. Carol singing is singing carols in the street or public places. It is on of the oldest customs in Great Britain, going back to the Middle Ages when beggars, seeking food, money, or drink, would wander the streets singing holiday songs.
