DECON AREA The cost This will depend on what your facility wants to spend. Things to consider You want to protect your: Medical Staff & Facility Medical Staff & Facility Provide the best care and treatment for the patient.

DECON AREA Permanent or Portable decon unit You can buy or build a portable unit for a small amount, but can it easily be assembled at 1 AM when staffing is low. The permanent unit is always ready, but will it take up valuable space or become a storage area?

DECON AREA Location When selecting a location there a few things to look at. * Accessible to the ED. * Do we have another entrance for non-contaminated patients. * Privacy for contaminated patients. * Storage for PPE and other related equipment * Security * Security

DECON AREA Workable If necessary can the unit be assembled at 1AM with low staffing. Will you have good patient flow. Are the triage/treatment - Hot – Warm – Shower – Clean areas easy to work in. Good ground transportation flow.

DECON AREA Containment of runoff Needless to what some people may say, you must try and contain your runoff. Depending on the type of decon unit you have this will take a pump, hose, and a 55gal drum / bladder or and under/above ground storage tank.

DECON AREA Accessibility Emergency transportation units in/out. Medical and support personnel Supplies and equipment

DECON AREA Security The area from where the transportation units arrive on the facility grounds to the treatment area must be a secure area.

DECON AREA Training of personnel Designated staff (medical, security, and support) must be trained in the donning & doffing of the proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and set up of the decontamination area and equipment. This isn’t a one time training it must be on going.
