“CENTERgize” Your Middle School Classroom What is a learning center? Learning centers are designated activities that provide an engaging way for students to work independently of the teacher in small groups, pairs, or individually to reinforce and extend classroom learning. Learning centers for middle school students are designed with the middle-level student in mind.

“CENTERgize” Your Middle School Classroom The primary objective of a learning center model is to meet with students one-on-one and in small groups in order to provide remediation of skills and concepts covered in class.

“CENTERgize” Your Middle School Classroom CREATING GROUPS • group by need/skill • group by interest • group by learning styles • group randomly (# drawn, colored cards, puzzle pieces, etc.) • self-selected grouping (students select their own groups) • flexible grouping (change groups as needed for any/all of the above)

Other things to consider when using centers: Frequency Number of students per group Number of centers in a rotation Amount of time for each rotation All depend on the specific needs of each class
