5 Continuum of Services for Gifted and Talented Education Overview Maryland offers a continuum of services in gifted education; some serving all students, and some considerably fewer. As program intensity increases, the number of students participating decreases.

6 Continuum of Services for Gifted and Talented Education Level 1 Nurture critical and creative thinking and problem solving in all students (all or most). Discussion protocols Higher-order questioning Inquiry-based learning Primary Talent Development Student-centered mathematics

7 Continuum of Services for Gifted and Talented Education Level 2 Provide additional challenge and enrichment as needed (many). Advanced Placement (AP) Programs School-Based GATE, A&E/Merit, and Honors Elementary Signature Language Program (Spanish). Boonsboro, Greenbrier, Old Forge, Paramount, Pleasant Valley, Potomac Heights, Sharpsburg, and Smithsburg Challenges and Contests. Destination Imagination, Geography Bee, National History Day, Stock Market Game, etc.

10 Grades PreK-2 Primary Talent Development (PTD) A science-based expert thinking curriculum based on gifted education. Exposes students to kinesthetic, STEM experiences that introduce the following behaviors over time: – Perceptive – Inquisitive – Communicative – Creative – Resourceful – Leadership – Persistence

11 Grades PreK-5 Elementary School-Based GATE Students engage in interdisciplinary lessons that are centered on a number of concepts/themes. Identified through the following: – Aptitude: Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (grades 1, 5) – Performance: 90 th + percentile on MAP testing – Performance: high-advanced level on MSA – Performance and Potential: task – Potential: parent and teacher checklist/referral – Potential: produces work at the “independent” level on Primary Talent Development tasks

12 Grades 6-8 School-Based Middle GATE (“A&E/MERIT”) Curriculum is accelerated and/or enriched, depending upon the subject area. Programs located in WCPS middle schools. Identified through the following: – Aptitude: Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (grades 1, 5) – Performance: 85 th + percentile on MAP testing – Performance: advanced level on MSA – Potential: parent and teacher nomination/checklist/referral

13 Grades 2-5 and 6-8 Elementary and Middle Magnet Programs Programs are designed for the most highly-gifted students in the county. All diploma-bound students are screened for aptitude during grades one and five. Eligible students are invited to apply for magnet programs, receiving a link to the application and an invitation to attend the school-based open house events. Students may apply to more than one program; however, they must complete an interview and task at each school to which they apply.

18 Emergent Scholars Programs Students with Desire and Determination Upward Bound Recruits during grade 8 HMSHS, NHHS, SHHS, WHS Participants are in the “academic middle” After school/outside school day with tutoring, Saturday, and summer sessions

23 Background: Maryland Annotated Code for Gifted and Talented Education “Gifted and talented student" means an elementary or secondary student who is identified by professionally qualified individuals as:

Facilitate opportunities for extended inquiry that support core curricular objectives. Provide opportunities to participate in co/extra-curricular activities.
