FOUR-DAY SCHOOL WEEK CONSIDERATION MILLER R-II SCHOOL DISTRICT TOWN HALL MEETING JANUARY 22, 2015

WHY CONSIDER THE 4-DAY WEEK?  Teacher recruitment and retention  Financial impact for the district  Student impact

Benefits  Students  Attendance – appointments on Mondays  Student achievement remains the same or slightly higher  ACT scores increase  Decreased drop-out rate  Improved climate and morale  Increased time on task and instructional time for students

Benefits  Financial  Salaries will remain the same  So how will the district save money?  Transportation  Less routes=less fuel, less maintenance, less wear & tear on equipment  Savings in food service  Savings in energy costs  20% less use in buildings & facilities  Substitute teacher pay is decreased  Savings in health care costs

Benefits  Teachers  Recruitment tool  Retention  Savings of fuel  Relationships with staff and students  More time to plan lessons, grading, and preparation for classroom  Continuous Professional Development on Mondays throughout the year  Collaboration with other teachers in department, vertical teaming  Professional development plan throughout the year  No ½ days of instruction for students = better instruction in the classroom

Concerns expressed  Cuts to salaries  Salaries will not be cut – here’s how…  Daycare on Mondays  Currently we have 16 partial weeks in our calendar. A 4-day week would add 17 more days.  Volunteers from the community to keep students  Basic needs of our students on Mondays  Resources are there to assist in meeting needs of our kids on days off.

What would the calendar look like?  We have only looked at a DRAFT calendar. However, it would be very similar to our current calendar.  School would start around the August 11 th or 12 th and get out May 19 th or 20 th.  The school day would extend approximately 30 minutes, approximately 8:00-3:45.  The school year would have approximately the same number of instructional hours as we currently have now.  Students attending VoTech would still go 5 days per week and would be bussed from the HS.  Students participating in extra-curricular activities and athletics may have practices on Monday afternoons/evenings, as they currently do, and competitions would not change.  Field trips, not competitions, would occur on Mondays, to avoid interruption of instructional time since there are fewer school days in the calendar.  Teachers would work the same amount of hours in a year as they currently work, it would be structured differently. For this reason, teacher salaries would stay competitive with other districts, as financially allowable.

What questions about the four-day week do you have?
