3 HEALTH CAREERS PROGRAM College of Health Sciences & School of Science, Engineering and Mathematics Some of our goals:  Prepare pre-professional students in becoming competitive and successful applicants to health professional programs.  Facilitate opportunities for students to gain experience and network with local health professionals.

4 WHAT DOES PRE-PROFESSIONAL MEAN?  Preparing for health professional school, i.e., medical school, where you receive training for a career in specific health-related field and/or specialized education.  “Pre-professional” is not considered a major or minor.  A pre-professional student is not required to major in the sciences, but it is highly recommended.

5 PROFESSIONAL VS. GRADUATE SCHOOL  Professional school = Training for a career in specific field and acquiring specialized education  Earn a professional degree, i.e., M.D., D.D.S., Pharm.D., D.P.T.  Graduate school = Mastering a field, research and/or thesis-oriented  Earn a Master’s or Ph.D. Options available for dual degree programs, i.e., MD/MPH or MD/PhD

9 HEALTH CAREERS PROGRAM  Program components:  Academic advising (working with success coaches), pre-requisites, summer programs, volunteer/shadowing/intern opportunities, admission requirements, test preparation, application assistance, events, Health Professional Advisory Board  Supports Pre-Med Society and other student organizations (interest in forming new?)  Do not have to be a science major to be in pre-professional program.

10 REQUIREMENTS To participate in the Health Careers Program and be eligible to receive Advisory Board recommendations for programs and professional school application, students must:  Register with the Health Careers Program office in the beginning of the fall semester each academic school year.  Schedule at least one advising session with Ms. Walker, Assistant Dean, within the first 5 weeks of the academic semester.  Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.  Attend a minimum of 5 HCP events throughout the year.  Volunteer, perform community service, attend a summer program, conduct research, intern or shadow a health professional in chosen discipline for a minimum of 50 hours each year. Additional hours may be required according to the chosen health professional school requirements.

12 “I WANT TO BE A DOCTOR, WHY IS RESEARCH IMPORTANT?” Research is essential for the advancement of health and biomedical science and is the foundation of public health, government, and the practice of medicine and other disciplines.  Engage in process of scientific inquiry  Understand statistical reasoning  Learn to formulate research questions  Design research studies  Present and/or publish findings  New MCAT2015 tests knowledge and use of research methods and statistics
