Atmosphere The air that surrounds the earth. Extends about 1,000 miles above the earth’s surface.
3
Hydrosphere Made up of the world’s oceans, lakes, rivers, and other bodies of water. Consists of 70 per cent of the earth’s surface.
4
Lithosphere Also known as the Earth’s crust. Makes up 30 per cent of the Earth’s surface.

Inside the Earth
8
Lies 4,000 miles below the surface of the earth. Believed to be solid.
Inner Core Lies 4,000 miles below the surface of the earth. Believed to be solid. Consists of Iron and Nickel
9
Outer Core Begins about 1,800 miles below the surface of the earth. Made up of melted Iron and Nickel.
10
Mantle Thick layer of dense, hot rock. The rock consists of silicon, oxygen, aluminum, iron, and magnesium.
11
Crust Thin layer, extending perhaps 3 to 30 miles below the surface. Consists of huge plate like sections of rock that float on a partially melted layer in the upper mantle. Includes the continents and ocean basins.
