WIDOW BUSTERS KPHLI CHANGE MASTER PROJECT CAN YOUR HEALTH DEPARTMENT MAKE A DIFFERENCE? YES IT CAN!!!! There are some simple things you and your agency can do to improve men’s health. Things that cost little or no money.
7
WIDOW BUSTERS KPHLI CHANGE MASTER PROJECT MAKING A DIFFERENCE Make your agency’s reception/waiting area “man friendly”. –You can have male-orientated reading materials i.e. sports or hunting magazines, in the waiting area. –Are the posters displayed on the walls representative of your community’s population, not just representations of women and children?
8
WIDOW BUSTERS KPHLI CHANGE MASTER PROJECT MAKING A DIFFERENCE Keep waiting times to a minimum. Studies have shown that if a man has to wait longer than 25 minutes there is only a 1 in 5 chance he will return to the agency!
9
WIDOW BUSTERS KPHLI CHANGE MASTER PROJECT MAKING A DIFFERENCE Make sure your staff is comfortable serving male clients. –Our preconceived ideas and attitudes can be picked up by our clients, resulting in a client that feels they are neither welcomed nor wanted in the agency.
10
WIDOW BUSTERS KPHLI CHANGE MASTER PROJECT MAKING A DIFFERENCE Do the written materials available in your agency i.e. pamphlets and information sheets, address health concerns important to men? Does your agency have on hand, and distribute, a basic health check list for men, advising when to have examinations and certain tests?
11
WIDOW BUSTERS KPHLI CHANGE MASTER PROJECT MAKING A DIFFERENCE Does your staff encourage the fathers to accompany their children for their visits and examinations? When the father does comes with the child does your staff teach childcare to both parents? –Remember the father may be the primary caregiver.
12
WIDOW BUSTERS KPHLI CHANGE MASTER PROJECT MAKING A DIFFERENCE Does your agency have at least one day every other week when it has later hours to accommodate men who work during the day? Does your agency sponsor a special outreach event, i.e. a men’s health fair, where men can come for basic information and tests?
13
WIDOW BUSTERS KPHLI CHANGE MASTER PROJECT MAKING A DIFFERENCE There are things even men don’t like to talk about, especially to a female. If possible have a male staff member available to talk to the male client that may have questions or concerns he is hesitant to talk to a female about.
