13 POLL! What has been your experience with conflict in your clubs?
I’m just a bystander What conflict? I don’t see any conflict! It’s give and take - somebody wins, somebody loses I support the majority We confront and resolve

14 Dealing with Conflict Collaborate Compete Compromise Accommodate
Observe Harmonize Bargain Force Problem solve Collaborate Compete Compromise Accommodate Avoidance High Energy & Effort Low Energy & Effort

15 How can we get to Collaboration?

16 How do we get there? When we are Accommodating, we let the other person get in the way of what we want When we are Competing, one person wants to have their way and not go along with the others needs or wants When we are Avoiding, the situation is not addressed and put off until later or maybe not at all When we are Compromising, there is an agreed upon solution but sacrifices are made by both or all involved.

17 POLL Who do you think should be responsible for managing Club conflict? Nobody – there isn’t any conflict President Committee Chair Past District Governor Everybody!

18 7 Steps to Resolution Step 1: Establish a climate of collaboration Step 2: Tackle the easy stuff first Step 3: Find out more by asking questions Step 4: Clearly explain the problem Step 5: Be willing to change Step 6: Listen for everyone’s perspective Step 7: Ask for assistance when needed

19 Case Study #1 Place: Whatsup Lions Club Who: You (Club President)
Lion Susan (Steak Fry Committee Chair) Lion John (17 year Lion) Lion Mike (1 year Lion) Scenario: Lion Susan comes to you with an issue involving Lion John and Lion Mike.

20 Details – Lion John What you know about Lion John:
He likes to do things the way they have always been done, because he sees it as being successful. He is very vocal about this. Because he has been in the club so long, he thinks he knows how things should be done, and he tells others what to do, whether or not they ask. Lion John is usually 10 to 20 minutes late to every club meeting; when he arrives, he spends time talking with other members before he sits down, usually in the back of the room. He is oftentimes rude and disruptive, and winds up getting fined

21 Details – Lion Mike What you know about Lion Mike:
He tries hard to follow the rules. He is very quiet and doesn't talk much. He has conservative and traditional values. He arrives early for each meeting and for each fundraiser and often stays late.

22 Details - Lion Susan What you find out from Lion Susan:
Lion John and Lion Mike have been assigned to work together at the Steak Fry. Lion Mike told Lion Susan he dreads the times he has to work with Lion John. He told her he’s noticed how Lion John does things and it doesn’t seem right. At the Steak Fry, Lion Mike came to his station early, but Lion John is nowhere to be seen. Lion Susan and other club members asked Lion Mike where Lion John was. Lion Mike hadn’t told anyone about Lion John’s tardiness because he was concerned members might start to associate him behaviors to be like Lion John’s behaviors. He had covered for Lion John’s tardiness in the past, and decided he wasn’t going to any more. When Lion John finally appears, with much commotion and distraction, Lion Mike tells him he should be on time for his shift and that others were looking for him. Lion John says, "Hey, I’ve been doing this job for years and you haven’t. Besides my not being here isn’t hurting anything, so mind your own business.” Tempers and frustrations start to flare between the two. Lion Susan appears in time to see what appears to be Lion John ready to push Lion Mike. Lion Susan tells them both to cool off and get to work.

23 Debrief #1 1. Which conflict style(s) do you see? Who is avoiding?
