Many repeats! DRILL FOR BEGINNING BEGINNERS
2
Achieving the necessary intensity of drill is difficult, especially with quiet, apprehensive children. Andrew Bear can often help. Sometimes we start by having the child’s own bear visit to say ‘hi’ to Andrew. We practise before they meet. Copyright © 2011 Caroline Bowen

What will Andrew say to your teddy? ‘Hi!’ What will Andrew say when he says bye-bye? ‘Bye’ Let’s do it! hi – bye – hi – bye – hi … Copyright © 2011 Caroline Bowen

Andrew is a large teddy with many clothes and interesting collections of things like ties, bees and bows that he keeps in his pockets. He does not talk much. The first two words he learned to say were ‘hi’ and ‘bye’. Copyright © 2011 Caroline Bowen
6
This is the special show he used to practise saying ‘hi’ and ‘bye’. He had to do a lot of practice to make the words easy to say. As he got better at saying them he got braver and braver. Copyright © 2011 Caroline Bowen

He got SO brave with his talking that one day he won a medal! Copyright © 2011 Caroline Bowen da-dah!

The first time we play this game we all wear ties. Andrew, the child, parent or parents and the clinician. The ‘hi tie’ / ‘bye tie’ game can be played by flicking the tie so that it hangs down your front (for ‘hi tie’) and down your back (for ‘bye tie’). Ties on elastic work well.
