1 Bulgarian National Revival Day

2 The Bulgarian National Revival, sometimes called the Bulgarian Renaissance, was a period of socio-economic development. It is commonly accepted to have started with the historical book, Istoriya Slavyanobolgarskaya, written in 1762 by Paisius, a Bulgarian monk of the Hilandar monastery at Mount Athos, and lasted until the beginning of the 20 centure.

3 Paisius of Hilendar Saint Paisius of Hilendar or Paisiy Hilendarski was a Bulgarian clergyman and a key Bulgarian National Revival figure. He is most famous for being the author of Istoriya Slavyanobolgarskaya – the first Bulgarian history book. Most Bulgarians think of him as the forefather of the Bulgarian National Revival.

4 Sophronius of Vratsa Saint Sophronius of Vratsa was a Bulgarian cleric and one of the leading figures of the early Bulgarian National Revival and he was born in the town of Kotel in eastern Bulgaria in 1739 to the family of a cattle trader. When Stoiko was 3 years old his mother, Maria died and he attended a monastery school and studied Slavic and Greek books. He had an interest in religion and became a cleric in 1762.

5 Vasil Aprilov Vasil Evstatiev Aprilov was a Bulgarian educator. He studied in Moscow, graduated from a high school in Braşov and then pursued a medical degree in Vienna. After 1811 he was a merchant in Odessa. He initially participated in the Greek revolutionary movement, but later devoted himself to the Bulgarian Renaissance. He gathered Bulgarian folk songs. In his will he left a large amount of money for building the Aprilovska High School in Gabrovo.

6 Ivan Vazov Ivan Minchov Vazov was a Bulgarian poet, novelist and playwright, often referred to as "the Patriarch of Bulgarian literature". He was born in Sopot, a town in the Rose Valley of Bulgaria then part of the Ottoman EmpireVazov's home in Sofia has been turned into a museum.

7 Vasil Levski Vasil Levski born as Vasil Ivanov Kunchev was a Bulgarian revolutionary and a national hero of Bulgaria. Dubbed the Apostle of Freedom, Levski ideologised and strategised a revolutionary movement to liberate Bulgaria from Ottoman rule. Founding the Internal Revolutionary Organisation, Levski sought to foment a nationwide uprising through a network of secret regional committees.

8 Hristo Botev Hristo Botev was a Bulgarian poet and national revolutionary. Botev is widely considered by Bulgarians to be a symbolic historical figure and national hero. Botev was born in Kalofer .His father, Botyo Petkov was a teacher and one of the most significant figures of the late period of the Bulgarian National Revival towards the end of the Ottoman occupation.He had a strong influence on his son during the latter's youth.

10 Lyuben Karavelov Lyuben Stoychev Karavelov was a Bulgarian writer and an important figure of the Bulgarian National Revival.Karavelov was born in Koprivshtitsa. He began his education in a church school, but in 1850 he moved to the school of Nayden Gerov in Plovdiv. He was then sent by his father to study in a Greek school for two years, before transferring to a Bulgarian school, where he also studied Russian literature.

11 Neofit Rilski Neofit Rilski was a 19th-century Bulgarian monk, teacher and painter, and an important figure of the Bulgarian National Revival. Born in the southwestern town of Bansko of Pirin Macedonia, he was educated to become a teacher, initially by his father Petar, and later at the Rilla Monastery, where he studied iconography and had access to Greek and Church Slavonic books.
