Look at the sentences below. They are all in the past. Can you put the sentences in the correct column? Compare the sentences. Have you ever eaten Korean food? Did you eat Italian food yesterday? I ‘ve read all Harry Potter books. I read a very interesting magazine last week. My father has visited all the Latin American countries. He visited Peru, Colombia and Chile last year. The verbs in blue are in the Past Simple. We use the Past Simple to talk about actions in the past and we know when they happened. The verbs in red are in the Present Perfect. We use the Present Perfect to talk about actions in the past but we don’t know the time. We use it to talk about experiences in our lives.

Notice that we use the Present Perfect to ask about experiences. To ask for more details or information about this experience we use the Past Simple. Did you like it? Yes, I have. Have you ever ridden a camel? I rode a camel in Egypt. Where did you do that? Yes, I did. It was very cool!
